What happens at Swansfield Library? All fifth graders may construct their own teams and create team names on our white boards. This is simply to help kids know who is interested in making a team. When 5 kids form a team and write on the library white boards this is not their official registration. Their adult coach registers them ONLINE via hclibrary.org/battleofthebooks. Please see below for specifics.

The "I'm Reading It" Team
Students form teams in October and November. All teams are formed by the students themselves: kids are not assigned to teams. A coach--usually a parent or family friend organizes the study groups as the year goes on.
Five High School Gyms are Packed for the BOB night!
Approximately 50 teams compete at each school. A panel of judges sit across the far side. When an answer is correct--everybody lets loose with cheering, screaming and lots of laughter! Is it an NBA basketball game? No, it's BOB night!
Ninjas! Many awards are earned in a fantastic night of fun!
One of our great teams posing for their photo at Atholton High School. There are awards and prizes for many of the teams. 50 teams compete at each high school. Awards may be won for clever costume ideas as well as having a good upbeat attitude during the contest.
First Graders collect elephant facts as we read a non-fiction book on the endangered pachyderms
The fun begins when we attach our carefully collected facts and attach them to our elephant hats!
Swansfield library has over 15,000 books
Students have independent time for book selection during each class. In addition to weekly class time check-outs, student who may pick-up reserved books and drop-off books between 8:30 am and 8:45 each morning. Never go without your book!
Healthy Eating Research
Kindergarten classes enjoyed learning about healthy snacks. They also liked constructing a poster for Jan Brett's Gingerbread Boy who is now carrying a healthy fruit snack. We also sang a healthy snack song and recorded it on Garage Band.
Sea Turtle Research
Fifth graders learn about sea and shore habitats when they focus on their research on sea turtles. Writing to our rigorous HCPSS writing standards prepare them for middle school challenges. Fifth graders know how to construct a citation, identify keywords and create a paraphrase. They also have solutions to the environmental issues that sea turtles face.
Code.org in Library Media
Students who are exposed to code writing enhance their logical thinking skills. The library offers opportunities for students to experience various coding modalities. The ability to sequence thoughts in logical patterns is vital to clear cogent written work. Access via Code.org website and also https://hcpss.me
