Tips to Remember
Scholarly Writing AT ALL TIMES
- YOUR GOAL IS TO USE AND LEARN FROM THE COURSE MATERIALS. WHEN WRITING PAPERS, BEGIN BY READING THE COURSE MATERIALS FOR THAT WEEK. WE LOVE TO SEE REFERENCES CITED USING WHAT WE GIVE YOU IN ADDITION TO WHAT YOU FIND.
- Check the individual forum and the Questions to Instructor forum daily for messages from me.
- Read announcements daily!
- ALWAYS INCLUDE A TITLE PAGE BEFORE SUBMITTING TO THE DROPBOX.
- ALWAYS INCLUDE A RUNNING HEAD ON YOUR TITLE PAGE.
- ALWAYS DOUBLE SPACE YOUR WRITING IN 12 POINT FONT TIMES NEW ROMAN.
- ALWAYS CHECK FOR SPELLING ERRORS.
- ALWAYS REVIEW REFERENCES FOR FORMATTING CLARIFICATION.
- SOLID ACADEMIC WRITING IS ALWAYS EXPECTED
- SUBJECTS AND VERBS MUST ALWAYS AGREE.
- VERIFICATION FORMS MUST HAVE LEGIBLE SIGNATURES AND COMMENTS ABOUT YOUR VISITS. IF I CANNOT READ THESE, YOU WILL NOT EARN POINTS.
- I WILL BE CONTACTING YOUR MENTORS TO DISCUSS YOUR EXPERIENCES.
- Slide requirements in PowerPoints do not include the title and references pages.
- PLEASE SAVE YOUR ASSIGNMENTS WITH YOUR NAME AND THE TITLE OF THE ASSIGNMENT. Ex. TTaylor-Proficiency Level Analysis
- Please check your returned assignments for comments/feedback. If you do not have a returned assignment but you do have a grade, then you're likely in good shape!
- Reference Lists contain citations that are discussed in your paper. If your references are not cited in your paper, you will lose points for APA inconsistencies. Visit the Student Support Center for formatting information.
- Always check your gradebook! If I have a bad grade in there but positive comments, I've gone too fast in my grading process. Email me!
- Discussion posts must always contain correct grammar and spelling. Points may be taken if these errors distract from the message you intended to portray in your writing.
Discussion Posts
Greetings Scholars,
Below you will find the participation requirements for our class. Please read the requirements below.
As you engage in the content and discussions in the course, I encourage you to get involved! Your success, enjoyment, and learning in this course are closely related to how you engage in the material being presented throughout the course. In order to be eligible to earn full participation points, you are expected to contribute to the class discussion in a meaningful way with at least 1 or more substantive responses on 3 out of 7 days of each online week. This is in addition to your initial DQ responses. When the discussion centers on a lively topic, it is not unusual to read what your classmates are talking about and to post multiple notes.
Substantive participation consists of messages sent above and beyond graded assignments (e.g., original DQ response, exams, and written papers). Both quantity and quality are important considerations when posting substantive messages. For example, "I agree,” “Thank you for your post,” or “I see your point” are not considered quality participation because none of these add substance to the discussion. Effective responses might share personal experiences in detail, include paraphrased cited/referenced information from articles or content materials, ask for clarification while explaining what is misunderstood, or add additional information, so feel free to analyze, interpret, critique, and suggest. This is a graduate level course so detailed responses are expected in order to earn full participation credit. Please note that the postings similar to the examples above will not count as substantive.
The messages must be related to the course topics for each module and include new ideas, personal perspectives and examples, or relevant follow-up questions. Think about quality and frequency as you strike up a conversation with your fellow classmates.
To meet the participation requirement each week, you will need to post the following:
1) Respond to each mandatory DQ first.
2) Then post an additional response or more on 3 out of 7 days within the calendar week). So, 1 or more substantive postings per day for 3 days should cover this requirement. These postings include responses to your classmates or the additional postings I add. The more the merrier, but they must be detailed responses. You will need a total of 3 or more responses in the DQ forum each week aside from the mandatory DQ responses.
Please “Reply” to this message within 48 hours to acknowledge this requirement.
Let me know if you have questions!

- Please be sure to conduct a spell check before posting. You receive up to 5 points, and because we are aspiring educators, I'd hate for points to be taken due to spelling or grammatical errors.
- Please see the rubric below for participation credit. If you do not have your initial responses, and 3 SUBSTANTIVE responses to your classmates for each topic weekly, points will be lost.
- Substantive posts are thorough, responses that remain on topic. You must appear to be engaged in the conversations in the course with your responses. Short thank yous, looks good, etc. are not substantive and you will not receive credit for them. The majority of your 20 participation points will come from your thorough responses to others.
- Please try to cite at least 1 source in your initial discussion post for maximum points.
Remember, a line or two does not constitute a substantive post. Again, saying "great job" or "nice post", does not count.
Discussion posts do not follow the late policy rule. Once the due date passes for submission, you will lose points if you do not participate.

"I have never used LopesWrite and I am having a hard time finding it."
If you click on Resources, and the Student Success Center in our course, you will find information about LopesWrite on the first page. It will say "Learn more," and is most helpful. Hopefully you can copy and paste the following article into your url to learn more. It also has pictures and instructions for accessing it before you upload your assignments to the dropbox for grading. Overall, LopesWrite shows me how much of your assignment is your work, and how much you may have pulled directly from other sources. Great stuff! Message me again if you have additional questions!
Ultimately, LopesWrite is submitted near where you would turn in your work. Be sure your work shows submitted in LopesWrite before you submit to the Dropbox.
LopesWrite Error Messages-Please Read!
LopesWrite is a great tool that can assist you with spelling, grammar as well as proper citation for all facts, stats, quotes and paraphrased material in you submissions. Please make sure when submitting the assignment to LopesWrite in the LoudCloud classroom that you refresh the page or come back to the assignment after a couple of minutes to review the LopesWrite score and report. Please feel free to make any edits to your assignment and then you can re-upload and check-out the new score and then submit it for assessment. If there are no changes, to make then please submit the assignment. Please note, that when you submit it to LopesWrite and then immediately submit the assignment for grading that this error message will occur and I am unable to review the LopesWrite report and we’ll both see an error message where the similarity score should be. When this occurs I’ll need to re-assign the assignment to you for resubmission to LopesWrite and a grade. If you have any questions, please reach out in the Private/Individual Forum.
What are CATs?
A CAT is a Classroom Assessment Technique placed in the Discussion Forum to get you thinking about other ideas along the same lines as your discussion question (DQ) topic. They are not required but responding to them provides a great way to earn more participation points, especially if you are struggling to provide substantive responses with the DQs for the week.
Message me in the QTI forum if you have questions!
