On Community, and Welcoming Summer - Rev. Mary Gear
This year, our annual theme has been “Building Beloved Community with a focus on anti-racism and the practice of coming together again, in-person, online, and in covenant.”
In this month of June, we bring the congregational year to a close by celebrating our community, our spiritual theme for the month, and transitioning to Summer.
Celebrating Community
The worship services this month will focus on different aspects of our community, from celebrating OUUC’s youth, to recognizing our heritage with a flower ceremony, to honoring fathers, to experiencing the wonder and joy of music.
On June 3, we will honor and celebrate all the ways that so many people serve our community, the OUUC community and the wider community. Join the fun at OUUC from 10-noon on Saturday morning.
In the wider community, there are ways to serve the Olympia community with others from OUUC: the Community Kitchen and shelter meals are examples. You can find information regularly in the Tuesday electronic update.
On June 10, you can join me at the Tumwater Dog Days in Pioneer Park from 10 am – 1 pm. I was asked to deliver an interfaith animal blessing that day, even after I confessed to being more of a cat lady!
This month we also celebrate the lives of two OUUC members, Janet Swanson and Karen Krueger.
Later in June, several of us will participate in the Unitarian Universalist Association General Assembly (GA). This is the annual gathering of UU’s from around the world, both onsite in Pittsburgh and online. Some of us will serve as delegates to GA. You can learn more about this at the after-service forum on June 4.
Add in Melanie Ransom’s Talk Show and a guest speaker sponsored by OUUC’s Environmental Action Team, and you have an array of events to participate in to experience community in its many forms.
We gather in community to worship and to mourn, to celebrate and to learn, and to expand our hearts and minds. We can extend the bounds of our community beyond the walls of OUUC to the wider community of Olympia, and even to the world. We can expand our connection to other animals, even to all of creation. When we experience community in the widest sense, we can glimpse the interconnected web of which we are a part.
Transitioning to Summer
At the end of the congregational year, we celebrate community and pause a bit to enjoy the beautiful Summer in our corner of the world.
The last Thursday community dinner for the year will happen on Thursday, June 8. Join us tonight for Southwest Rice Bowls and next Thursday for “It’s a Wrap!” There are ample opportunities to connect with others during the dinner and afterwards in planned activities.
We'll pause The Spark after next week. And you can stay up to date on OUUC and community events with the Tuesday weekly update.
But, be assured that activities over the Summer will continue!
Our weekly worship service will continue at 10 am Sunday morning. Starting in July we will welcome guests into the pulpit. I will be away in July and return in August for planning and study time. You can also expect other staff to take time away this Summer for rest and renewal.
Rev. Sara is coordinating a children’s Summer Camp in July and we will offer 5th-6th grade OWL (Our While Lives sexuality education) in August.
And mark your calendars for Saturday, August 26 when we’ll gather for a congregational picnic at Millersylvania Park from 3-7 pm.
So, this month and this Summer, celebrate community in all the ways!
See you around.
Rev. Mary
Flowers! Flowers! Flowers!
It is a long OUUC tradition to do a flower ceremony in June to mark the coming of Summer and the end of the congregational program year.
This year’s flower ceremony at OUUC will be in the service on Sunday, June 11. If you plan to attend the service online, please find a flower or flowers to show on your camera. If you plan to attend onsite, please bring a flower (or several) with you. We’ll have some flowers available, so no one will go home without some color and beauty.
It is also a long Unitarian tradition to hold a flower ceremony in the Spring. The flower ceremony ritual was developed by Rev. Norbert Čapek in June 1923, so it is 100 years old this year! The idea of flower ceremony is to celebrate our colorful diversity. In the ritual, we share the beauty of flowers and go home with a different flower than we came with.
Plan to join this service filled with history and beauty.
