4th Grade Media Updates
🎃🕸️ October STEAM'tober Update: 4th Grade Media Progress! 👻🚀
Exciting news from your child's 4th-grade class this October! In the spirit of STEAM'tober and Halloween, our students have been actively engaged in some truly spooktacular projects. Here's an update on their latest activities:
🖌️ TinkerCAD Creations: Our students have been busy exploring the world of 3D design in TinkerCAD. They've successfully designed personalized name tags, which you can see in the examples below. Throughout this process, they've learned the importance of patience, as the prototyping phase can take several hours to complete.
🎮 Minecraft Magic: In the virtual world of Minecraft, your child and their peers are working together to construct spooky houses. This project is not only fostering their creativity but also honing their teamwork skills as they bring their spooky visions to life.
📖 Storytelling and Music: As a next step, they'll be weaving eerie narratives to accompany their Minecraft creations. Using GarageBand, they'll be adding ghostly music, and even creating original sound effects to intensify the spook factor. It's been impressive to witness their tech-savvy skills and their ability to work together effectively. Teamwork is at the heart of their success in these projects.
Please take a moment to chat with your child about these exciting developments. We highly value your support, and we're looking forward to sharing more updates with you soon. 😄

Black Eyed Susan Books 2024 🌻
What is the Black-Eyed Susan Book Award?
The Black-Eyed Susan Book Award is a student choice award for the state of Maryland that has been awarded each year since 1992. The award seeks to promote literacy and lifelong reading habits by encouraging students to read quality, contemporary literature.
Reading committees of school and public librarians, and other interested members of the Maryland Association of School Librarians (MASL) meet to determine which books will be nominated and placed on student reading lists.
There are six different reading lists:
- Picture Books,
- Fiction/Nonfiction for
- Grades 3-5
- Grades 6-8, and
- High School
- Graphic Novels for
- Grades 3-5,
- Grades 6-8
Start Reading Today!
✨In the spring, students can participate in a March Madness style book tournament if students have read at least 3 novels/graphic novels and 10 picture books. Encourage your child to start early on the booklist as they will select our schools' most popular reads this year!
Black Eyed Susan Book Highlight 💫
Garlic and the Vampire Paperback by Bree Paulsen (Author, Illustrator)
An enchanting, farm-fresh debut graphic novel starring an unusual heroine who is braver than she realizes, for middle grade readers looking for a cozy, adventuresome read in the vein of Witch Boy or Be Prepared.
Garlic feels as though she’s always doing something wrong. At least with her friend Carrot by her side and the kindly Witch Agnes encouraging her, Garlic is happy to just tend her garden, where it’s nice and safe.
But when her village of vegetable folk learns that a bloodthirsty vampire has moved into the nearby castle, they all agree that, in spite of her fear and self-doubt, Garlic is the obvious choice to confront him. And with everyone counting on her, Garlic reluctantly agrees to face the mysterious vampire, hoping she has what it takes.
After all, garlic drives away vampires…right?
