Northwest Herald Athlete of the Week for Dec.29-Jan.4
FEMALE ATHLETE OF THE WEEK
Lauren Shafer, Harvard, girls basketball
Shafer scored a career-high 18 points as the Hornets beat North Boone, 40-36, on Dec. 30. Shafer, a senior, was voted Northwest Herald Female Athlete of the Week for her performance.
The Hornets added wins over Round Lake and Willows Academy this week. Harvard (10-9) has already doubled its wins (5) over the past four seasons combined.
Shafer answered some questions from sports writer Alex Kantecki about her team's abrupt turnaround and more.
What do you remember most about your performance (career-high 18 points) against North Boone last week?
Shafer: I wouldn't have been able to score those 18 points without the help of my teammates. It was a very physical game and North Boone was in foul trouble very early. My teammates were able to find me, and I started driving hard and taking open shots.

Tips from the Athletic Trainer
Sleep
“Why is everyone always going on about how important sleep is? I’m just fine I can get by with 4-5 hours and I don’t see a problem…”
Maybe you’ve heard someone say something similar to this before. Perhaps all that “SCIENCE” is just a bunch of bogus nonsense that they tell people like eating right and exercise can improve your health. I’m sure that by this age you’ve experienced the effects of little to no sleep at night and you were able to function the next day right? I mean who has time for the Center for Disease Control’s (CDC) recommendation of 8-10 hours of sleep for teenagers? Seriously…8-10 hours of sleep a night? Do you know how many vitally important tick-tock videos and memes a person would miss if they slept that much? They would wake up more refreshed and full of energy sure but they wouldn’t have any friends or would be alienated from their group because they hadn’t seen the amazing video where someone they kind of know dances to a song they kind of like for a few seconds. Tragedy is indeed part of the teen experience and this is the tradeoff that a teenager has to make every night.
This tip from the Athletic Training room isn’t going to tell you what to do because let’s be honest, teenagers prefer to do the opposite of what their told purely as an experiment in testing boundaries. But for those of you who wish to improve your performance both in the classroom and in sports this tip is a no brainer….GET MORE SLEEP! Increasing amounts of scientific data show that better and more quality sleep have better outcomes for almost every part of human life that they have tested. It’s FREE, its legal and you can’t hurt yourself or anyone else doing it too much. Don’t take my word for it, do your own quick research on sleep deprivation and its long term effects. Chronic sleeplessness is linked to alzheimer’s, heart disease, cancer…If you have trouble sleeping after that because of the anxiety it produces try some of the tips you find out there: TURN OFF ELECTRONICS, darken your room, read a book… Then if you still have trouble getting to sleep or staying asleep maybe we need to work on your physical exercise levels and work you harder at practice so that you sleep better. All the best for now, have a Good night!
