WAUWATOSA MONTESSORI SCHOOL
September 15th
Message from the Principal
Dear Wauwatosa Montessori School Family,
Happy First Day of Hispanic Heritage Month! Today the students all celebrated some aspect of their learning and growth throughout the first two weeks of school with a paleta (Spanish word for popsicle). Ms. Dawson’s 7th and 8th graders celebrated turning in their field trip permission slips for their trip to City Hall. Ms. Zheng’s class celebrated the first graders doing new things and classmates respecting learning by listening politely and attentively. Ask your child to share some things their class celebrated!
Our weekly virtue of mindfulness this week was kicked off with a visit from Ms. Amber Tanty, our social emotional learning specialist. All students were introduced to mindfulness skills and how to use the tools in their classrooms, including our classroom calming corners and/or peace tables. Classrooms also had time to practice mindfulness as a group using techniques such as breathing techniques. Thank you, Mrs. Tanty and all of our staff for modeling self-awareness and strategies for self-regulation.
Next week, I will be hosting an informational session on Nature’s Classroom Institute from 6:15-6:45 p.m. on Tuesday, September 19th (Google Meet Link: Nature's Classroom Informational Session with Principal Pallin

We are excited!

Backpack Donation
Montessori Families,
Our district has received a generous donation of backpacks filled with essential school supplies for elementary or middle school students. If you are in need of one for your child, please contact the school counselor, Ms. Migdal at migdalbe@wauwatosa.k12.wi.us to arrange the logistics of getting your child one of these backpacks. We are very grateful to our community partners for expressing their commitment to our district by making these generous donations.
'Diversity, Equity, Inclusion & Accessibility'
"At Wauwatosa Montessori School, we understand the importance of ensuring that all students feel seen, heard and accepted. We are proud that the Wauwatosa School District ensures that students are the number one priority. For this reason, we’re excited to announce that Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Accessibility (DEIA) Advocates are now in every school building and are building upon work from last year!
The purpose of the DEIA Advocate is to act as a resource for students, families and staff to teach communication and self-advocacy skills, help build relationships and help students and families to effectively communicate their concerns to their school or teacher. The request for advocacy is confidential. If you or your child are interested in speaking with a DEIA Advocate, there are a few steps you or your student can take. Students can access a google form to request the DEIA advocate through Classlink. On Classlink, there is a folder labeled Montessori that brings you to a button labeled DEIA Advocate Request. Clicking this button takes you or your student to the google form that will be used to submit a request. Adults can also access the google form to request assistance through the weekly newsletter that Ms. Char sends out each week. Finally, if your student feels more comfortable with paper and pencil, paper request forms will be made readily available in each classroom, the office and multi-purpose room. Your student can elect to privately fill out the form and then turn the form into a discrete folder in the Multipurpose Room (lunchroom) or Office.
DEIA Advocates are prepared to support our students, families and staff in the following areas:
Building a relationship with a peer or staff member
Feeling purposely isolated or excluded
Discussing peer or adult conflict
Communication issues or concerns
Developing self- advocacy skills
Building confidence
Assistance with effectively expressing views/opinions
Development of coping skills
If you experience or witness staff or student misconduct, bullying, safety concerns or discrimination of any form, please contact the building principal immediately.
If you are unsure who to contact for a specific situation, your building’s DEIA Advocate will be happy to assist you. Wauwatosa Montessori’s DEIA Advocate is Mrs. Emily Walt. Mrs. Walt will be touching base with classrooms over the next few weeks to re-introduce her role to students and remind them how to access assistance!"

PTSA Meeting
Our first PTSA meeting of the year is on Tuesday, September 19th, 7:00-8:30 PM in the AP classroom. Get informed. Get connected. Get involved! The PTSA is a volunteer organization that helps connect parents with the school, builds community through events and advocates for education on a national and state level. Become a member! Stop by the front office ($10 per individual for the year), attend a meeting, or join electronically in your Givebacks account at our online store.
Givebacks
Thank you to all the families that have signed up! Givebacks is the home of all things PTSA including the family/student directory, PTSA event calendar, future spiritwear store, parent communication hubs, volunteer opportunities, fundraising information, and more. If you haven’t signed up, please do so here.
Fun Run Movie Night
We appreciate everyone’s hard work fundraising last spring for the Micromarathon. As a prize, our school is celebrating with a movie night Friday, September 29 at 5:30 PM in the WMS gym. We will decide which movie at the PTSA meeting on Tuesday. This will be a family event (no student drop-offs). Bring your own seating and blankets. Free popcorn!
Trunk or Treat
This annual event will be held in our school parking lot Wednesday, October 25th, 5:30-7:30 PM. Families park their cars, open their (decorated) trunks, and pass out treats. Students come in costume to trick or treat in the parking lot. Prizes are given for best decorated trunks, individual costumes, and group costumes. This event is a family favorite!
Save the Date: Parent Social
We have set aside Friday, November 3rd as the Parent Social Night. This is an informal event where parents can meet each other. In the past we have done this at the Landing at Hoyt Park and restaurants/bars. We are taking suggestions! If you have an idea for this year, please contact someone in PTSA or email us at tosamontessori.ptsa@gmail.com.
