Special Message From Superintendent Walker About Recent Threats
In the last days, several of our students and families have reported hearing verbal rumors of threats and seeing school shooting threats posted on social media. The verbal threats quickly circulated through schools in our district, and one social media post said the word “Hueneme.” These threats were immediately reported to the Oxnard Police Department and the Port Hueneme Police Department. OPD and PHPD investigated and determined the threats were not credible.
Schools across the country and here locally are seeing an increase in students making inappropriate and potentially dangerous posts to social media, particularly on Instagram. This week alone, there have been a variety of social media posts that created a significant disturbance at a high school in Oxnard. This led to the suspensions and arrests of the student suspected of posting it.
HESD takes all threats very seriously. It is important for students and families to immediately report any rumor they hear about harming anyone on our campuses to a teacher or school administrator. By staying vigilant and alerting adults to any potential concerns, we can all do our part to ensure our schools remain safe. The safety of every student and staff member at our schools is our top concern and we appreciate your partnership in that effort.
Sincerely,
Dr. Christine Walker Superintendent
