ALTERNATIVE METHOD OF INSTRUCTION
Southern Boone School District AMI/Virtual Learning Days Update
The school district wants to provide an update to parents/guardians about plans for the remainder of winter if inclement weather would cause the school district to not be in session. Due to the winter weather this month, the school district has used all six snow days that were built into the 2023-2024 district calendar.
The school district has five Alternative Methods of Instruction (AMI) or virtual learning days that we can use. As we continue through the rest of winter, any additional days of school not being in session due to winter weather will be AMI Days for students and staff.
Additional information about AMI Days will be shared with parents/guardians from your child’s teachers and/or building principals. If you have any questions about AMI Days, please contact your child’s building principal.
SBHS AMI GUIDELINES FOR THE 2023 - 2024 SCHOOL YEAR
Parents,
When we have Alternative Method of Instruction (AMI) Days, Southern Boone High School will use the following guidelines. Please contact your student's teacher or Mr. Van Deven should you have any questions regarding our AMI days procedure.
Virtual Learning
Google Classroom will be the platform all teachers will use, Dual credit classes, though, will use Canvas. Assignments, announcements and updates will be posted in either Google Classroom or Canvas. Students will continue to post their completed assignments there, as well.
More time should be spent on new material and deeper exploration of learning objectives. Please try to avoid “busy work”.
Grades will be based on our traditional letter grade format (A, B, C, D, F) whether the teacher uses a total points system or weighted grades. Hold Harmless Grading will not be used.
Teachers will provide meaningful and timely feedback. Assignments should be posted as soon as possible on the AMI days.
Due dates will be announced and clearly posted on Google Classroom
An average guideline of 30 minutes of engagement during online days is encouraged per class (teacher lecture, work, student follow up, etc..)
Types of engagement will vary depending upon the department. Teachers will use one of the following options for online activities:
Content-based activities that encourage reading, writing, reflection, and problem-solving
Learning activities including handouts or online work
Discussion boards
Recorded lectures
Or whatever sort of lessons best suit your content area
Instructional Aides can be used to assist teachers in planning, content delivery, and feedback to students.
Teacher Office Hours
Teachers should be available from 8:00 AM until 3:00 PM to answer emails and to engage with students, as needed.
Teachers should try to respond to any emails within 24 hours and should be available during our AMI hours (8:00 - 3:00) to assist students.
Student Expectations
Students need to be engaged in learning activities and/or lessons each day, provided by the teacher.
Students and parents will be responsible for staying up to date on classroom communication, information from the teachers and completion of lessons.
It is expected that work assigned on AMI will be completed by the due date.
Students will be responsible for the proper use and care of their Chromebook.
Enjoy the weekend!
Go, Eagles!
Go, Chiefs!
