Hi Cannon Parents!

Can you believe that the final week of school for the fall semester is already here? This school year is flying by at lightning speed and there have been so many incredible learning opportunities for our Cannon Cubs and celebrations for our entire school community!

Class holiday parties will be held on Thursday, 12/21, beginning at 10:30. Also, just a reminder that Thursday, 12/21 is an early dismissal day and students will be dismissed at 11:45 am.

Best wishes to all for a beautiful holiday break with your family & friends!

Education Foundation Awards Grants @ Cannon!

The Grapevine-Colleyville Education Foundation brought their prize patrol to Cannon last week to award some grants to staff!! Congratulations to Kensley Sutherlin & the other GCISD P.E. teachers for being awarded a grant to purchase Drum Fit equipment to be used in P.E. classrooms across the district! Also awarded at Cannon, were two grants for STEM Education to Tony Zahn, Director of Science & Instructional Technology. Funds from these grants will be used to support STEM learning at Cannon, GMS & GHS.

Candy Houses In Kindergarten!

Our Kindergarten Cubs had a wonderful time building candy houses with dads last week! Some GHS football players & other special guests from GCISD administration showed up to help with this fun holiday activity! Click here to see photos from this event!

Cannon Robotic Teams Earn Trophies!

Both of the Cannon robotics teams brought home trophies from the regional FIRST Lego League robotics qualifying tournament this weekend! Congratulations to our teams, Mission Impossibots, 1.0 & 2.0 and their coaches, Mr. Parthemore, Mrs. White, & Mrs. Vorachard, for their hard work with these teams this year!

IT'S TIME FOR THE SPELLING BEE!

Students in 4th & 5th grade will have an opportunity to participate in a Spelling Bee pre-test at Cannon on Tuesday, December 19th. Based on the pre-test results, the top performing students will participate in a campus Spelling Bee on January 12th. Study materials & resources will be shared with students, for use over the winter holiday break, to study for the campus bee. Campus winners will advance to the GCISD Spelling Bee, scheduled on February 9th.

Please encourage your 4th & 5th graders to participate in this event!!

Cannon Elementary - A Recognized Common Sense Media School!

Common Sense, the national nonprofit organization dedicated to helping kids and families thrive in a world of digital media and technology, has recognized Cannon Elementary: A GCISD STEM School as a Common Sense School.

Cannon Elementary has been using Common Sense Education's innovative and research-based digital citizenship resources to create a culture of digital learning and citizenship. This recognition acknowledges our school's commitment to taking a whole-community approach to preparing our students to use the immense power of digital media to explore, create, connect, and learn, while limiting the perils that exist in the online realm, such as plagiarism, loss of privacy, and cyberbullying.

We are honored to receive this recognition! By preparing our students to use technology safely and responsibly, we are providing them with unlimited opportunities to maximize and personalize their learning.

Cannon Talent Show will be Friday, February 9. Students need to start planning acts. Details being sent home with students soon.

School Calendar for 2018-2019

On Monday, November 13, GCISD Trustees approved the Student and Staff Instructional Calendars for the 2018-2019 school year.

A few highlights from the 2018-2019 student instructional calendar:

Students will begin classes on Monday, August 20.
Students will have a four-day weekend in October for Columbus Day weekend; staff will have a three-day weekend.
Students and staff will have a four-day weekend in April (dependent on the need to makeup one or both inclement weather days).
Students are finished on May 30 with graduation following that afternoon and evening.
