In the Classroom
Interacting with Peers
The ability to enter successfully into ongoing social interactions is an important social skill. This ability begins with an infant's early interactions with a primary caregiver and quickly grows into an interest in watching other children at play. The preschooler who talks about friendships becomes a kindergartner who establishes and maintains relationships over time with special friends.
Currently, our program is focused on providing the skills needed for our students to successfully join in play with other children. Teaching phrases such as, "Can I play too?", modeling turn taking and providing visuals of friendship skills are some of the strategies our staff have been utilizing within the classroom. Classrooms have also worked together and shared materials to create murals, even utilizing cardboard to align with our current box study.
How can you continue this learning at home? Model some of the strategies below and encourage your child to practice these skills to join in play with a sibling or another friend. You can visit a local park and support your child as they join in play with other peers.

We appreciate your partnership in your child's education! It is proven that a child's success in school is directly related to family engagement in education!
