A Message from the Principal
Phoenix Family,
Can you believe this is the last week of the 2022-2023 school year? It has been a great year!
We have a busy week ahead of us.
- Chromebook turn in begins today so make sure your student brings their charger to be turned in as well. All technology fees must be paid by Friday. Fees do carry over to the next school year and follow a student if they are moving buildings. Students owing fees will not be issued a Chromebook for the 2023-2024 school year until the balance is cleared.
- Ninth through 11th grade students received an exemption recommendation sheet during 1A today. Teacher signature forms were handed out in 1A today. Students take it to all classes today and tomorrow. To communicate with parents, students must get their teachers’ signatures to be EXEMPT from class on the 24th, 25th & 26th. The teacher only signs if the student’s overall grade is at 3.2 or higher (Partial Success at Meeting) (overall grade would be 80% or higher when entered in eSchool). Please ask your student for the form Tuesday afterschool to verify if your student is exempt from one or more classes. Exempt students may attend on the exemption days. They will follow their normal schedule.
- Please ensure your student has turned in all library books and calculators.
- May 25, 2023, 9-10 a.m. - Awards Assembly for 6-8th grade students (parents of students receiving awards have been notified).
- May 26, 2023, 9-10 a.m. - Awards Assembly 9-12th grade students (parents of students receiving awards have been notified).
It is truly a privilege to serve as principal of Don Tyson School of Innovation. Thank you for entrusting us with your student's education. Have a great summer!

High School Exemption Criteria
The SPS school district will pilot a semester test exemption for grades 10-12. DTSOI will offer this exemption to grades 9-12. The exemption will not apply to 6-8 grades.
Dates of interventions for students who are not at the proficiency level of “partial meeting up to exceeding” in a course.
Exemption Criteria
9-12 grade students who are at the proficiency level of “partial meeting” up to “exceeding” in a course are exempt from interventions provided on May 24, 25, and 26. A student who wishes to move from meeting to exceeding can still choose to attend class to provide evidence or receive volunteer hours through peer tutoring or other campus community service opportunities.
A student may be eligible for the exemption if he/she:
Has 5 or fewer absences in the class. If a student has more than five unexcused absences, they will continue attending the class even if they are at the “partial meeting” or higher.
Per course, to be exempt, a student must:
Is at or above the partial meeting level of proficiency in a course
Have five or fewer unexcused absences (excluding school business, college visits, and principal excuses)
Have five or fewer tardies
