5 Essential Survey
Beginning 1/30/24, students and teachers across Illinois will have an opportunity to participate in the eleventh annual statewide Illinois 5Essentials Survey. This survey is designed to generate a detailed picture of the inner workings of your child’s school. As a parent/guardian, this opportunity will allow you to share your thoughts on the important elements of school effectiveness in a survey about your child’s school.
On behalf of the Illinois State Board of Education, the 5Essentials Survey will be administered online by UChicago Impact at the University of Chicago. The survey gathers data related to five indicators that can predict important student outcomes, including improved attendance and larger test score gains. These five indicators that affect and predict school success are:
· Effective Leaders
· Collaborative Teachers
· Involved Families
· Supportive Environments
· Ambitious Instruction
Prior research in more than 400 schools has shown that schools that were strong on at least three of these “5Essential” indicators were 10 times more likely to improve student learning gains in math and reading than those that were weak on three or more Essentials.
All teachers and fourth through 12th grade students will be responding to this survey. 5Essentials Reports will be generated for schools if their teachers and/or students meet the response rate threshold of 50 percent. These reports will be sent to schools and districts in May and will also be included in the State School Report Card.
Additionally, your district has chosen to provide the optional supplement parent survey. If at least 20 percent of Hooper parents/guardians complete this survey, a parent report will also be generated. The parent data will not be included on the State Report Card.
Your participation in the parent portion of the survey will help us understand the conditions at your child’s school and guide improvement. Your identity and survey responses will be kept completely confidential and will never be connected to you or your child.
The Illinois 5Essentials Survey for students and teachers will be conducted 1/30/24-3/29/24 The Parent Survey Supplement will be conducted during that same period. To take the survey please visit https://survey.5-essentials.org/Illinois/ and select the appropriate survey to begin.
For more information about the Illinois 5Essentials Survey, or to view previous years’ Reports, please visit https://www.5-essentials.org/illinois. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact UChicago Impact Survey Support at 1-866-440-1874 or impact-surveys@uchicago.edu.

Art
The art students are busy making valentines for our senior citizens. The beautiful valentines will be delivered to various senior citizen homes in our area.
We are also learning about color. The 4th and 5th graders are reviewing complementary colors and learning about contrast. Third graders are using color to pinpoint focal points. The kindergarten, 1st, and 2nd graders are learning about warm and cool colors and how to use the colors to create contrast. Early childhood students are having fun creating colorful animals.
Have a great February. Spring is just around the corner!
Library
February is here! And 3rd grade is ready to learn Robot Turtles using the skills they learned from code and go!
4th grade will be working on a class lego build to hopefully be completed in March, they will begin choosing a famous building or structure to build. I cannot wait to see their end designs.
1st-2nd graders are adding marble runs to their stations in the library. They are excited for the opportunity to see how marble runs work during the construction of one!
Kindergarteners are still having an opportunity to use a lot of our stem items. They will continue to test out different types as well as get to read more Monarch stories as a class.
5th graders are exploring the many board games the library has to offer. Currently they are helping each other learn how to play chess. We will be learning how to play 5 minute mystery next!
PE
We are rolling into our Basketball Unit this December. We will be learning about the rules and strategies of basketball. All grades will be learning the skills of dribbling, passing and shooting!
To finish off the year, we will be playing a bunch of different holiday games!
Happy Holidays! :)
Music
We are very busy in music class this winter. The third, fourth and fifth grade have started instrument performance units on the recorder and the ukulele. We are learning beginning playing techniques and reviewing staff notation reading.
The first and second grade students are studying the orchestra and instrument families. Ask your student about some of the interesting facts we have learned about why instruments are grouped in families and can they name instruments from those families.
The kindergarten is busy preparing for their music concert on February 1! They are so excited to be on Hooper’s stage for the first time! Their show entitled “Happy, Healthy Me!” is full of fun songs about eating right and exercising. We can’t wait to share it with you!
