A Message from the Administrative Team
Greenwood Students and Families:
On Wednesday evening we hosted approximately 45 families interested in having their kindergarten child attend Greenwood for 2024-25. Plans for next school year will continue this spring with classroom visits by our counselors to gather course selections. If your family is planning NOT to return to Greenwood for whatever reason, we would like you to notify the administration as soon as possible. This simply helps us in filling spots for the new school year. In addition, if you plan to apply for financial assistance through FACTS https://factsmgt.com/ please do so by March 1, 2024.
We appreciate the time, effort, and dedication our students and coaches devote to their sport. Success comes in many forms, but for our boys’ basketball team this season success has come in multiple wins and recently a championship in the Spokane Tournament. CONGRATULATIONS! We encourage all of our stakeholders (fans) to show support for our teams with your attendance. Visit our website Greenwood Laboratory School (missouristate.edu) to view EVENTS for the next upcoming game.
The start of the 2nd semester provides a good opportunity to reflect and provide feedback. We would like for each parent to visit: https://eprovesurveys.advanc-ed.org/surveys/#/action/245195/7222 and participate in a short survey. This survey has been used in the past and the data informs leadership about areas for improvement. In addition, this data is utilized with Cognia for our upcoming accreditation visit next school year. Thank you in advance for your participation.
Go Blue Jays! GO Chiefs!

First Graders Learn About Being a Pathologist
Student of the Week Eli Odem’s mom, Dr. Jamie Odem, visited first grade today to share about her job as Pathologist.
Students were shown the different parts of the microscopes.
Students also were able to view slides to look at cell structures.
A favorite slide was of a Bee’s hind leg. Eli treated everyone to Oreo’s after the presentation.
Elif Benzer performs with South Central Missouri All-District Honor Band
Congratulations to Elif Benzer for earning a seat in the South Central Missouri All-District Honor Band! This band of the top students across the district gave a stellar performance at Nixa High School on Saturday, January 20. The Greenwood band program is proud to have Elif represent them!
Middle School Debate
We had our first successful Middle School Debate practice on Tuesday after school. We basically had a full house in Room 212! I think it would be great to get a Facebook post that said something like this (and included the attached pics) to help generate even more interest!
Over 20 middle school students attended the first Middle School Debate practice after school on January 23! We had vibrant discussions over key topics like "Is chicken pot pie a soup, salad, or sandwich?" AND we began the process of analyzing fiscal policy related to economic inequality, in addition to discussing other current events. Any student in grades 6-8 is welcome to join at future practices. Our next meeting is Tuesday, February 6th.
6th Grader Ty Mwengi and Family Help Develop Library in Kenya
Most, if not all of you, know that Ty Mwengi (Grade 6) and his family have been helping a grade school in rural Kenya to develop a library. Well, after several years of partnering with the school and community, and with support from the Greenwood family and other friends, the library was officially commissioned on December 27, 2023. Ty and his family attended the special event (that included planning a tree, below) which was attended by students, teachers, parents, government officials and media representatives. Ty gave a speech (inset) to the attendees highlighting the value of books in arousing dreams and shaping imagination. The remodeled classroom is now fully equipped with hundreds of curricula, reference and fun-to-read books. We couldn’t have achieved this without all the support from Ty’s class, Ms. Jeni Hopkins (Assistant Director), Ms. Jennifer Grace (Art Teacher), Ms. Minal Kahn (11th grade), and the rest of the school. Now we are thinking about the next phase of the project! After some consultations, the headteacher, the board and the parents requested if we could help support their vision of developing a computer lab for the school. This will involve fundraising to remodel one of the classrooms and obtaining the necessary equipment. We believe this is a realistic goal and with your support we are determined to achieve it because we know it will positively impact the lives of the students and their families.

From our Elementary Counselor, Mrs. McCann
In an effort to educate and increase student understanding about school safety, Greenwood Security Officer, Ronnie Long, will join me in guidance this semester to share age-appropriate information on school safety. This training for students was included as a recommendation from the collaborative efforts of our Greenwood Safety Committee and David Hall, Director, University Safety.
Students will learn the basics of how to be safe in an emergency at school as well as vocabulary to identify the type of emergency (shelter, shelter in place, lockdown, and evacuation). Students will be informed of how to proceed should Greenwood need to take safety measures that require action.
Note: you will receive communication in advance of your student’s presentation. Our intent with this initial communication is to give our parents/families advance notice of an upcoming topic.
Please do not hesitate to contact me or Officer Long (Ronnielong@missouristate.edu) with any questions or concerns. Our goal with this effort is to minimize confusion and feelings of uncertainty should an emergency occur at Greenwood.
From our Secondary Counselor, Mrs. Ewing
NEXT YEAR SCHEDULING: Mrs. Ewing will present next year’s scheduling information to our rising secondary students (current sixth through eleventh graders) beginning mid-February. Students will receive directions and information for selecting their courses for the 2024-2025 school year. They will bring home a Selection of Studies form to be reviewed, approved, and signed by parents. These forms will be returned to Mrs. Ewing by March 4. Watch for more details about an informational zoom session to be offered for parents. Next year scheduling updates will be offered in future newsletters as we progress in the master scheduling process led by Dr. Snodgrass and Mrs. Hopkins.
