A Word from Mrs. Hoffmann
Dear Families,
Oh my! This year has gone by so quickly! As I watched Mrs. Osman preparing her end-of-the-year video for her class, I was amazed to see the physical changes in her students over this school year. This gave me pause to think also of the cognitive, social-emotional, and intellectual changes of all of our students since September. Our MAP data is one measure of the changes that students make in reading and math, but there are so many more changes that teachers and parents notice that cannot be measured on a standardized test. We use multiple measures and now is the time that teachers take a look at all of their strategies and methods. It is a time for reflection, looking at our goals--successes and areas for continued growth. It has been a good, fruitful year, and it is time for a little rest.
Congratulations to our Battle of the Books, fifth grade team “Miraculous Journey of NAMMACK Inc. ” who took home the elementary traveling trophy. The students were Charlie Hannan, Nora O’Tool, Katie Katula, Milo Hagopian-Smith, Addison Scharlau, Ava Schwantes, and Molly Hambrook. They competed against students from Eisenhower and Roosevelt. This means next year we will host the competition in an effort to defend the trophy! Everyone on both teams did such a great job, reading the books and preparing for the battles.
I also want to give an end of year shout out to our Green Team staff--Jenny Leigh, Liz Daily, and Stephanie Jaramillo--and all of students who participated in helping sort lunchroom trash all year and picked up classroom and restroom compost every Friday. We could not have been the Green School that we are without your dedication! Thank you!
I would like to thank PTO President, Lindsay Stadler, for keeping us updating with weekly McKinley PTO newsletters. This is an invaluable resource for our school community. Thank you to the PTO for these items that will be purchased from proceeds of this year’s adult social: for the art room - iPads and art supplies; for the music room - a few replacement instruments; and an art field trip for second grade. I also want to thank all of you for your time in classrooms and the library, for field day and the talent show, for lunchroom help, and fifth grade completion, in providing staff treats, meals, birthday surprises, and appreciation gifts, for volunteering for all of the many many PTO events and fundraisers, for helping to make our grounds look nice through planting, pruning, weeding, and picking up trash around the school. We have such a wonderful community, providing amazing examples for kids on a daily basis! Our students see volunteerism and taking action as normal in life. What a gift for them to see and experience the way a community works when everyone plays a part. Thank you all for all you do!
In staffing news, we will say goodbye to gym teacher Mrs. Millicovsky, who will be at Eisenhower next year. Mr. Roloff will remain full time at McKinley and Ed Raue will join us for four sections of Phy Ed. As many of you have already learned, we are down to two sections of 1st Grade, so Mrs. Petitt will move to Senior Kindergarten. In fifth grade, Mrs. Lawinger will stay home with her new baby next year, and Joy Provan will be back after a year of maternity leave. Since our projected Special Education enrollment is lower next year, Ms. Berg will be transferred to Jefferson and Lincoln.
Friday is the last day of the school year, but the learning can continue throughout the summer. Trimester three report cards will be mailed home on June 13th. As our fifth graders move on to middle school, we all wish them well as they embark on the next step in their educational journey. I hope that reading, writing, and creating are on top of everyone’s list for the break!
Charlotte will be in a few hours next week and a couple of days in July, and then she will be back full time the second week in August. I will be here much of June, but will take a little time off for a family vacation in July. I also have three conferences to attend this summer--one near the end of June, one at the end of July and start of August, and one August 14-16th. The best way to reach me, Charlotte, Terri, or Juan this summer is via email:
Jean Hoffmann hoffmaje@wauwatosa.k12.wi.us.
Charlotte Garder garderch@wauwatosa.k12.wi.us
Terri Uden udente@wauwatosa.k12.wi.us
Juan Matute matuteju@wauwatosa.k12.wi.us
Have a safe and happy summer everyone! Thank you for all of your support this year. I appreciate your partnership as we continue to provide a wonderful place where children love to go to school and learn. I have appreciated your feedback this year and will continue to do all I can to foster a positive culture at McKinley.
Look for our July and August newsletters with reminders for summer dates and other news that might come up!
