February 17, 2023 -- "Principal's Special Edition"
Dear EWS Families:
It is with respect and gratitude to this wonderful community, the EWS Community, that I say not "goodbye", but "I will see you later," as I end my tenure as Principal of Eames Way School today.
I will always and forever treasure my time as Principal of the "little school on the hill", the best school, with the best students, the best families, the best PTO and the best staff an educator could wish for.
Wishing you all much happiness, good health and please, be KIND to one another.
With a full heart,
Bill Campia, Principal-EWS

FEBRUARY is AMERICAN HEART MONTH!
The HEART is a muscle about the size of your fist! It carries blood full of oxygen and nutrients all around the body and rids the body of waste. For school age kids, the heart beats anywhere from around 60 to 118 times a minute when you’re resting and even more than that when you’re active. That’s hard work!
Exercise is the best way to keep the heart strong and healthy. Kids can make it a goal to play outside as much as possible, get involved in sports, or even to participate in activities often such as tag or hide and seek!
Healthy eating is another great way to take care of the heart. Fruits and vegetables are at the top of every pediatrician’s heart-healthy food list. Try mixing them in a smoothie or preparing low-calorie dipping sauces to pair with them. Pediatricians also recommend whole grains, fish, and lean meats.

ILLNESS PREVENTION
1) HANDWASHING (see picture above)
2) HYDRATION
How much water does my child need?
The amount your child needs will vary depending on their age, size and level of activity. For children under 8 years of age, at least 4-6 glasses of water is recommended. For children older than 8 years of age a minimum of 6-8 glasses is recommended.
If your child is playing sports or is very active they will need extra fluid. Kids will also need more fluid on hot days or when unwell.
How do I know if my child is hydrated?
Frequent bathroom breaks are the easiest way to tell if your child is hydrated. You can also look out for these common symptoms of dehydration
Headaches
Poor concentration
Thirst
Cracked lips
Dry mouth
Constipation
Lethargy
Dark urine
3) SLEEP
How Much Sleep Do I Need?
How much sleep you need changes as you age. The American Academy of Sleep Medicine and the Sleep Research Society recommend:
Pre-School 3-5 years: 10-13 hours per 24 hours (including naps)
School Age 6-12 years: 9-12 hours per 24 hours
Teens Age 13-18 years: 8-10 hours per 24 hours
Habits to Improve Your Sleep
Be consistent. Go to bed at the same time each night and get up at the same time each morning, including on the weekends.
Make sure your bedroom is quiet, dark, relaxing, and at a comfortable temperature.
Remove electronic devices such as TVs, computers, and phones from the bedroom.
Avoid large meals and caffeine before bedtime.
Get some exercise. Being physically active during the day can help you fall asleep more easily at night.
Please reach out with any questions or concerns.
