Purple Power Event!
Dear Parents,
Tonight is the Purple Power basketball game at the North High School. Purple Power is a community event to help raise money to fight cancer. Over the past week or so, students at Great Lakes have had the opportunity to purchase Purple Power items at lunch to help the cause.
On a personal note, my mom was diagnosed with cancer roughly a year and a half ago and this event has become even more meaningful to my family. Thankfully, my mom is currently cancer free. However, as a family it has been important for us to support this event and we hope to see you at the game on February 14th (tonight). The girl's game starts at 6:00 PM and the boy's game will be played after the girl's game.
I also wanted to let you know that our very own Mrs. Colvin, does so much of the organizing of all of our Purple Power events. She has taken on a real leadership role in this event and as a Great Lakes staff we are very proud of her!

Battle of the Books
America's Battle of the Books is a voluntary reading incentive program for students in grades 3-12.
Website: http://www.battleofthebooks.org/
Why?
The purpose is simply to encourage students to read good books and have fun while competing with peers. The students gain knowledge and enjoyment from reading good books, sharing them with friends, parents and teachers, plus the fun of competing in the "battle.”
How?
1. A student participates by reading from the book list provided. They do not need to read each book on the list, but as many as they can. They should keep a summary so they can review this information before their "Battle.”
2. Students are expected to read at least 4 out of the 10 books.
3. Books will be available to check out at school but students are also encouraged to go to the library and check out the books or purchase the books for their home library.
When?
The event will run for 2 months, from March 23rd - May 22nd.
Activities will include:
1. Informational meeting and kick-off
2. After school “Lock In and Read”
3. Read through Recess Opportunities
4. Battle of the Books Competition
