This Week @ PS 88Q

I hope everyone had a wonderful week. As always, its been a busy one at PS 88Q, and it looks like the remaining two weeks of 2022 are just as packed! From Holiday Concerts, family activities, festive celebrations and open houses, our community is finally able to gather. Over the past few months, seeing our families in the building has been wonderful. As a parent myself, I know how important it is to see what your child experiences every day!

This week I wanted to speak about access to your child's NYCSA (New York City Schools Account), MySchools (for 3k, prek, kindergarten and middle school applications) and their doe email (@nycstudents.net email). Those two access points are absolutely vital. Parents and guardians must have access to all of this information. Your child's information, as well as access to Google Classroom, I-Ready, Sora, Attendance, Grades, Transportation, and IEP are at your fingertips. You have access to all of this. In the event of a snow day, your child will learn remotely. We want to make sure everyone is ready for that as well. The DOE provides so many apps for students for extra support that are free, and accessible. Are you able to access them?

My priority is getting every family on line with these platforms. For some, it is as simple as resetting your child's password. You and your child should know their google log in and password, which will allow them to access TeachHub. Families should have access to their NYCSA to access all student information, including grades. This week I will be hosting Coffee with Mrs. O'Shaughnessy and our topic will me a technology support. We want our families to be able to access all of the resources that are there for you.

We are excited to begin the Kindergarten application process. It is a wonderful time for families to explore the many options they have for kindergarten. At PS 88Q, we couldn't be more proud of the early childhood experience that we have created. From as early as our 3K, and PreK, we have focused on developmentally appropriate, play based and project based instruction as well as a focus on the arts and sciences. Our kindergarten classes continue that scope, while incorporating computational thinking, STEM, and project based learning. We are strong supporters of the Science of Reading philosophy, with a multi-sensory approach to phonics, phonemic awareness, vocabulary, background knowledge and verbal reasoning, to name a few. We are proud of our STEM Diversity Class which is a District 24 initiative that we have obtained through a district grant. PS 88Q and the Student Council want to give back this holiday season. Many of our families are in need this season, not only for toys, but for winter clothes. Please join us is supporting our community with a new toy or clothing for our families. All donations can be dropped off in our lobby! Please mark with a tag indicating size, age, etc.

Our Student Council is collected canned and boxed food for our families. Next week, we will open our pantry for families. Community helping community, that is PS 88Q!
