Nick Sousanis is an assistant professor in the School of Humanities & Liberal Studies at San Francisco State University. He is the author of “Unflattening” (Harvard University Press), which began as his dissertation created in comics form. "Unflattening" has won the 2016 American Publishers Association Humanities award, the 2016 Lynd Ward prize, and is nominated for a 2016 Eisner Award. In addition, it was named the best graphic novel of 2015 by numerous critics.

ABOUT ERIC VELASQUEZ

Children's book illustrator and author Eric Velasquez, the son of Afro-Puerto Rican parents, was born in Spanish Harlem and grew up in Harlem. His dual heritage coupled with the experience of living in dual cultures in New York City gives Eric a rich and unique cultural perspective. As a child, his love for doodling and drawing was strongly encouraged by his mother. From his grandmother he inherited a love of music and from his father he developed a love of film.

Workshops

1:30-4:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 3, 2017

Start the weekend immersed in a workshop. Esteemed academics will lead workshops focused on special topics in the language and literacy field. Workshops will be divided into two sessions, each 1 1/2 hours long. Attendance is FREE with conference registration. Space is limited so register soon!

Scholars Speak Out

This month, the Scholars Speak Out (SSO) Editor, Lourdes Cardozo-Gaibisso, wanted to begin JoLLE's 2016-2017 academic year with a note from the editor. In it, she argues, "In times of breakthrough, both at the national and international level, silence implies passive acceptance," informing our readers that this year's SSO essays aim to disrupt dominant discourses and challenge harmful ideologies. We have a wonderful lineup of SSO authors that we cannot wait to share with you this year!

For this month's Take 2, we highlight Stephanie R. Jones’s (2008) article, Grass Houses: Representations and Reinventions of Social Class through Children’s Literature, which unpacks representation in children’s books with a focus on social class. Despite an ever-growing consciousness of the need for diversity in books for young people, an overwhelming amount of texts show representations of lives that accurately depict only a fraction of the people who read them. Eight years later, the core message of this article still rings true, and we are honored to highlight it again for this month’s Take 2, which can be found here.
