Ember Green

Ember's compassion is evident to all who come into contact with her. She is always wearing a smile on her face, quick to help anyone in need, and fills a room with the warm energy of her kindness. We are proud that Ember is a Houston Tiger! Way to go, Ember!

Proud to be an American!

Houston Middle Schooler Oliver Greiner was honored Thursday for his award-winning essay in last year's Fleet Reserve Association Branch 364 essay competition. Greiner finished third with his submission of "Why I am Proud to be an American." He was presented a certificate and cash prize by David Herndon, FRA Branch 364 president.

Houston Community Night

Limited tickets remain for Houston Community Night on Sept. 10 at the Springfield Cardinals. Along with Houston R-1 Bands performing the national anthem, the state champion HHS Scholar Bowl team and the district champion HHS softball team will be honored on the field. A Houston representative will also throw out the first pitch (See those details here: https://fb.me/e/1HIGoPbre)

Homecoming 2022

HHS Homecoming will be here in just a few weeks. Here is some important information for both our students and our community for Hollywood Homecoming 2022:

• PARADE through downtown is 1:45 p.m. Friday, Sept. 16. Lineup starts at noon. Entrants should contact the HHS Student Council at hhsstuco@houston.k12.mo.us.

• CORONATION is 6:30 p.m. at Tiger Stadium prior to the 7 p.m. kickoff against Cabool.

Suicide Prevention Month

September is Suicide Prevention month, but suicide awareness is something we should be mindful of every day. According to the CDC, suicide is the second cause of death among high school students ages 14-18. In Missouri, the percent increase in suicide death rates among persons ages 10-24 has increased by 71.3% from 2007-2009 to 2016-2018. (https://www.cdc.gov/nchs/data/nvsr/nvsr69/NVSR-69-11-508.pdf)

Suicide is preventable. According the Mayo Clinic (https://www.mayoclinic.org/healthy-lifestyle/tween-and-teen-health/in-depth/teen-suicide/art-20044308), here are some signs to watch for:

Talking or writing about suicide — for example, making statements such as "I'm going to kill myself," or "I won't be a problem for you much longer"
Withdrawing from social contact
Having mood swings
Increasing use of alcohol or drugs
Feeling trapped, hopeless or helpless about a situation
Changing normal routine, including eating or sleeping patterns
Doing risky or self-destructive things
Giving away belongings when there is no other logical explanation for why this is being done
Developing personality changes or being severely anxious or agitated when experiencing some of the warning signs listed above

If you or someone you know may be suicidal, please call or text 988 for the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline for 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, services or your local emergency numbers.

Line Up Times After School Pickup

To alleviate traffic congestion around the district, parents/guardians/families picking up students after school should not line up on the streets more than 5 minutes before classes dismiss.

Lineup times for each building are:

EARLY CHILDHOOD CENTER - 2:40 p.m.
ELEMENTARY - 2:45 p.m.
MIDDLE & HIGH SCHOOL - 3:05 p.m.
