Disney Digest 2022-23
October 24, 2022
Notes from Dr. Elliott
Dear Disney Families,
It has been a great first quarter! We are anxious to continue deeper learning in all areas, including our social-emotional learning by being our Dolphin Best. We have several new opportunities to sign up for volunteer time and another opportunity to help with our first Neighborhood Block Party on Nov. 4 from 1-2pm. See below for more information.
I look forward to see our families learning about their child(ren)'s success in the classroom through Parent Teacher Conferences. Please honor the teacher's time and other parents by being on time and following the time increments allowed for a visit. If you find you need more time, you may always schedule another meeting. As you leave or are waiting for your conference to begin, please check the Lost and Found table at the entrance. All items that are not claimed will be donated at the end of the week. Thank you.
Engage & Encourage
Volunteer Opportunities
If you would like to help out in anyway, we are looking for Guest Readers in the classroom for DEAR Days. Because we had a high interest rate in signing up for guest readers, I have added more slots for upper grades. We cannot guarantee teacher specific. We want all students to benefit from this opportunity and cannot accommodate that all parents will be assigned to their child's class. Our volunteer opportunities will support all learners.

Parent Engagement Opportunity (P.O.D)
POD has been working on other volunteer opportunities. For these opportunities you will need background checks. Please be on the look out for these starting November.
Neighborhood Block Party
Congratulations Team Amistad for winning our first ever Neighbor Block Party for Dolphin BEST! These classes make up the neighborhood: Walker(K), Kennedy (1), Clearwater (2), Hughes (3), Oliver (4), Gentry (5) Whorton (Spec. Services), Sexton (Art)
I am looking for parent volunteers from 12:30-2:30 on Nov. 4 for set up, serving food, game design (possibly 1-2, 1 of those 2 with a chance to win a prize?), and take down. I am currently planning this party, so if anyone wants to participate, please let PTA or I know.
Educate & Empower
Red Ribbon Week
This week is designed to encourage students to be aware of their power to choose and be advocates for themselves in situations where it may feel or cause harm. We talk about peer pressure, making good choices and strategies if we find ourselves in a situation that makes us feel unsafe. The students are showing their spirit in the following ways:
Monday: Movie/Book character day
Tuesday: Super Hero Day
Wednesday: Jersey Day
Thursday: Twin Day
Friday: Assigned Color Day
- Kindergarten BLUE
- First GREEN
- Second YELLOW
- Third RED
- Fourth PINK
- Fifth Tie Dye
Please encourage your child to take part in the spirit of Red Ribbon Week.
Executive Functioning Skills
Some students become very fearful of making mistakes and feeling they are unable to do the work with it gets challenging. Our teachers work hard to also teach executive functioning skills. Executive functioning skills are the ability in our brain that help us complete everyday tasks. Executive functioning skills are:
- Planning
- Organization
- Task initiation
- Time management
- Attention
- Metacognition (how students think about our thinking)
- Working Memory
- Self-control
- Flexibility
- Perseverance
These skills continue to develop into early adulthood, but start in early childhood. However, executive functioning needs to be through explicit teaching. How can parents help their child in this area? Below are some great resources to help you work with your child in these areas. It begins at home!
