From LASD Health Services Department:
When to Keep Your Child Home From School
Sometimes it is difficult to know whether or not to send your child to school. The following guidelines are indications that you should keep your child at home. In this way, you are helping to control the spread of COVID, influenza, colds, and other contagious illnesses.
Keep your child at home when they have any of the following:
Fever of 99.6 or higher
Headache
Chills, Muscle/Body Aches and/or pain
Undiagnosed rash, sores and/or spots
Cough and/or Sore throat
Unusually red, crusted, goopy, and/or burning eyes
Wheezing/Trouble breathing
Head Lice
Nausea, Vomiting or Diarrhea
If your child tests negative for COVID-19 or any other communicable illness, they may return to school once the following criteria have been met:
- fever free for 24 hours without medication
- vomiting and/or diarrhea free for 48 hours without medication
- all other symptoms have improved
NOTIFY THE OFFICE IMMEDIATELY if your child tests positive for COVID-19 or is diagnosed with any other communicable illness (e.g. chicken pox, mumps/measles, whooping cough (pertussis)).Your child must be cleared to return to school.
Note: The following information is only a guide to common childhood health concerns. Contact your health care provider for more information. Always bring a copy of a physician’s note to school and/or notify the school if your child will have an extended absence due to a health condition for 5 days or longer.
Opt In Messaging System
Over the course of any school year unforeseen emergencies may occur. Our number one concern is your child’s welfare and safety. We want to make sure we are able to reach you if the need arises.
Our schools utilize the SchoolMessenger system to deliver text messages directly to your mobile phone with important information about school events, safety alerts and emergencies.
You can participate in this service (standard message rates from your carrier may apply) by sending a text message of “Y” or “Yes” to the short code number, 67587. You will receive a confirmation message and may opt out at any time by replying “Stop” to any one of our messages.
I hope everyone has a wonderful 3 day weekend!
Be Kind, Be Strong, Be Well and Stay Bobcat Strong!

Ruby Bridges Walk to School Day: Tuesday, November 14th Veterans Plaza
Ruby Bridges Walk to School Day: Tuesday, November 14th Veterans Plaza
Please join us for our second WOW Day as we honor Ruby Bridges' courageous walk to school 63 years ago! More than 343,000 students nationwide have pledged to walk to school on November 14th to celebrate Ruby’s bravery and the upstanders who supported and protected her.
Ruby Bridges’ book “Through My Eyes,” detailing her powerful experience as a first grader, is our Project Cornerstone lesson this month.
Schedule:
7:15-7:45 AM: Coffee, Donuts, Quick Talk about Ruby Bridges
7:45 AM: Leave for Santa Rita via Edith to Los Altos Ave
8:00 AM: Arrive at Los Altos Ave/Yerba Santa to pick up other students
8:05-8:10 AM: Leave for Santa Rita
8:15-8:20 AM: Arrive at Santa Rita
8:30 SHARP: School Begins
RECESS: Student Body Picture (Optional)
- What we are doing: We are walking from the Veteran’s Plaza to Santa Rita with signs promoting community and gratitude towards Ruby Bridges’s bravery and courage. We will meet at Veterans’ Plaza in Downtown Los Altos at 7:30 AM. Coffee and donuts will be available while we share Ruby Bridges’ story. We will head to school at 7:45. For those who don’t want to/can’t walk that far, there will be a second meeting location at the corner of Los Altos Ave and Yerba Santa. We will arrive at Los Altos Ave/Yerba Santa no later than 8:05 for the second location walkers to fall in with us.
Egan students will walk/escort (wearing black) our students to school to symbolize the federal marshals who were upstanders for Ruby Bridges.
- Who is Ruby Bridges?: As a 6-year-old, she was the first Black child to integrate an all-white school in New Orleans on November 14, 1960. For her entire first-grade year, federal marshals escorted her to and from school for her safety. As she walked to school, people who were against integration would yell, scream threats, and throw things at her, and even pulled their kids out of school.
- What to wear:
TK/K: WHITE
1st: RED
2nd: ORANGE
3rd: YELLOW
4th: GREEN
5th: BLUE
6th: PURPLE
- What to bring: Students are encouraged to bring posters and signs with positive messages of support during our symbolic walk. Posters and signs can be made over the weekend, or at one of these three opportunities:
Tomorrow at lunch
Friday 3:30-5 at 470 Cherry Ave Los Altos (Kelly Sanders house)
Monday at lunch
These videos from the inaugural Ruby Bridges Walk to School Day 2022 are incredibly inspiring and have great ideas for posters:
