Words of the Day
Phenomenon (noun) – observable events that occur and that we can use our knowledge to explain or predict
Evidence (noun) – data (numbers or observations) that supports the claim
All Levels
Select a phenomenon scenario to investigate and explain.
Scenario #1: Problem Solving Crow
There is an object floating in a container of water. The crow cannot reach it. The goal is for the crow to remove the object from the container.
Prediction: Can YOU think of a way that the crow could somehow remove the object out of the container? Write down (or draw out) your plan and explain why you think your plan will work.
Investigate: After making your prediction, watch this video to see how this crow tried to solve the problem.
Explanation: What did the crow do? Did it work? Why or why not? What is your evidence? How did the crow’s plan compare to your plan? Share your thinking with someone.
For more crow challenges watch “6 Experiments” or “Are Crows the Ultimate Problem Solvers?”
Scenario #2: Looking Through Water
An empty glass is placed on a table. Two arrows were drawn on a piece of paper and set up behind the glass. Both arrows are pointing to the left. Water will slowly be poured into the glass.
Prediction: Predict what you think will happen to the arrows when water is poured into the glass and filled up so that the water line is above both arrows. Select one of the choices (A, B, C, D) below and explain why you picked your choice.
Scenario #3: Candle Trick
Prediction: Predict what you think will happen to the flame, candle, and water when the glass is placed over the lit candle. Explain why you think this will happen.
Investigation: Once you have recorded your prediction, do the investigation or watch this video to observe what happens.
Explanation: What did you observe happen? Why do you think this happened? What is your evidence? Share your thinking with someone.
