Bernardo Parent Bulletin #4
August 20, 2023
It was an incredible first week of school! Things ran very smoothly and our students settled in quickly to their new routines and schedules. We hope that your child came home excited and eager to tell you all about their days and above all, are loving their school experience so far.
A huge thank you to our PTA for the Boo-Hoo/Yahoo breakfast and the Kona Ice Family Social this past Friday. It takes a lot of time and effort to plan events like those and we are extremely grateful to have parents who are willing to dedicate themselves on behalf of our students and families.
Our goal is to make school as memorable and meaningful as possible for our students and for YOU as we greatly value our parents as partners in their child's education. Here's to an amazing second week!
Time to say goodbye at the gates
Starting this Monday morning, all parents will need to say goodbye to their children at the gates when dropping off in the morning. We will have many staff members and morning greeters available to assist students who need help. Please be assured that we have utilized this process the last couple of years and it's amazing how quickly our students adjust and learn.
Honoring Some Outstanding Summer Readers
This past Thursday, 33 students were honored with a popsicle party for meeting their summer Accelerated Reader (AR) goals for the summer! We are very proud of these students (and their families) for making reading a part of their summer routines.
If you have a 2nd-5th grade student, be sure to encourage him/her to start working towards their 1st trimester AR goal now so that they can join us at our next AR goal-busting party!
Back-to-School Night on Thursday, August 31
Join us at our back-to-school night on Thursday, August 31 in your child's classroom. It will be a great time to meet with your child's teacher and hear about their goals and plans for the year as well as ways you can be involved.
Below are the times for each grade level. Please note the revised times for 1st and 3rd grades. We adjusted them to reduce any potential conflicts for families with multiple students.
- K/1st: 5:30-6:00
- 2nd/3rd: 6:00-6:30
- 4th/5th: 6:30-7:00
Please do not bring children with you to Back-to-School Night. This event is for parents only as we want everyone's undivided attention.
Attendance Matters!
Morning Greeter Application for 2nd-5th Graders
2nd-5th grade students are invited to apply to be morning greeters here at Bernardo! You can click here or on the link below for an on-line application or print out the attached document and send it to school with your child.
Thursday Morning Assemblies
Every few weeks, we will be holding school-wide morning assemblies from 8:10-8:30 in the morning. These are fun times to build school spirit, honor students with awards, make important announcements, and have a lot of fun! Dates for these assemblies will be listed in our weekly bulletins and parents are invited to come and watch if they would like.
Our first school-wide assembly will be this Thursday, August 24. If you'd like to come, just sign in at the office and line up in the hallway up near the the outdoor stage.

Back Gate Updates
So far, the back gate has been a huge success and helped reduce traffic at all areas around the school! Several parents have commented that their lives have been forever changed! LOL!
Here are a few reminders about the back gate:
- Any student in TK-5th grade can utilize the gate for entering the campus.
- Only 3rd-5th grade students and siblings are to use it to exit. 2nd grade students may utilize the gate after school if the parent and teacher have agreed that the student is mature enough.
- On rainy days, we hope to keep the gate open. However, if it gets too muddy or swampy, the gate may be closed. Given the amount of rain coming down from this latest storm, it is highly likely that it will be closed on Monday, August 21.
Birthday Marquee
Our PTA had an older Venmo account that is no longer used and unfortunately, that Venmo QR Code link was sent home with the PTA back-to-school packets. If you already completed a form for your child, there is nothing further you need to do. However, moving forward, please use the flyer below which is also linked on our school web site and can also be picked up at our front office. We apologize for any mix-up!
