Introduction

The month of March has been very busy at Palmyra! All of our classes have been busy with projects, activities, field trips, and special visitors! We also finished up the second trimester. Spring break is here - enjoy the time off!

S.T.E.A.M. at Palmyra

S.T.E.A.M stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics. All of our classes participate in STEAM activities throughout the year. We are trying to expand the opportunities for students to participate in these activities so they are college and career ready! STEAM activities also develop critical thinking and communication skills. We are working hard to set up a STEAM Lab on campus for all grade levels to use as a resource - we'll have more to share on that soon!

Below we are highlighting a few exciting events or activities that our students have been participating in.

iPad Stands

Students in Ms. Campbell's 5th and 6th grade class designed iPad stands using our 3-D printer. They made a design and then created it in the computer program, Tinkercad. The 3-D printer brought their designs to life!

Design Challenge

Students in Mrs. Campbell's 3rd and 4th grade class were challenged to design a two story tower structure that was strong enough to resist breaking or collapsing when wind was applied to it.

The Traveling Scientist

Our First Graders have been learning about animals and their habitats this year. The Traveling Scientist visited some of our classrooms and showed them all kinds of real life animals! Students even got to pet some of them!

Visual and Performing Arts (VAPA)

Our 5th and 6th grade students participate in VAPA twice a week for 45 minutes. Students choose to be in Band, Orchestra, or Art/Drama. Our 4th grade students will be observing all classes and then making their selection for next year in April.

Technology

Our students use iPads and Chrome Books in all classrooms on a regular basis to work on collaborative projects and to work independently on instructional software. Did you know that all students have access to an individualized, online reading program called Lexia? Students can work on Lexia at home too! Just have them sign on through the District website (the My Dashboard button). Contact your child's teacher if you need more information.

Gamification in Math

"Gamification" has made learning about fractions easier and more fun for students in Miss Slattery’s Fifth Grade class. Each "gamification" math lesson coincides with a quest for the students to protect their town from attacking zombies. Ms. Slattery says the quest is not over but she is confident that her students will defeat the zombies with math!

March AVID Strategy - Costa's Levels of Questioning

This month our 5th and 6th grade AVID classes focused on "Costa’s Levels of Questioning". This strategy helps students develop the skills needed to become critical thinkers. Students are taught that there are three levels of questions. Level one questions gather information directly from a text or source. Level two questions require students to process information. Level three questions ask students to apply their knowledge and what they learned from the text to real world problems. Our students are improving their critical thinking skills by asking and answering questions!

Coins for Kids with Cancer Fundraiser By: Hailey Sanchez and Alejandro Escalera

During the month of March Palmyra Elementary is proud to be taking part in “Coins for Kids With Cancer,” a fundraiser for the Pediatric Cancer Research Foundation. Our inspiration for fundraising is Gavin Rowe, Mrs.Rowe’s son. Gavin is 11 years old and recently underwent a promising Immunotherapy Trial at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. We wear orange on Fridays because it’s Gavin’s favorite color. We are so happy to announce that we raised more money than we did last year! This year we raised $3,375.00!
