Mrs. Hankins

Each month Mrs. Hankins will have a challenge that is for students to do outside of school. It's a way to keep our minds sharp. This month's challenge is focused on our amazing brains. Students will write or draw about ways they use their brain.

Forms are due Friday, September 22 then one random winner from each grade will be selected to be Principal for the Day with Mrs. Hankins.

These students will help pass out birthday prizes for the month, share good news notes with students and staff, create a news report, and help with other leadership duties.

Mrs. Kegebein is our media specialist, or librarian, at JSE. She helps out in our kindergarten and first grade rooms in the mornings with groups, helps students check out books, has centers and read alouds for students in the library, and is helping me with a Maker Space for kids as they come into the library.

We cannot wait for you to join us at Books, Brownies, and Bots this Thursday! Come check out our great library with the best librarian!

Get involved with PTO! We have a great group of family volunteers that do so much for our school. We could not do many of the amazing things we do for students without their support.

Meetings are the first Tuesday of every month at 6pm at the JSE Library. You may bring your children too.

The cafeteria offers healthy snack extras for the purchase during lunch in addition to the school daily lunch listed on the monthly menu. All snack extras offered adhere to the Smart Snacks in Schools USDA guidelines. Students are able to purchase snack extras according to the schedule below if they have money in their account, unless a parent requests this not to be an option. If you do not want your child purchasing the extra snacks in addition to their lunch, please indicated this.

We will begin starting extra snacks on September 5. Please be sure to have this form completed by August 31. You may also indicate this on your Mealtime account. If you have any questions, please call the school at 759-2508 ext. 3020

Snack Extra Option by Grade Level

• K-1st: Ice cream or cookie on Fridays. No snacks available for purchase
• 2-3rd: one snack and one extra
• 4-5th: two snacks and one extra

Snack prices and examples:

$1 each: baked chips, healthy popcorn, rice Krispy treats, large bottle of water, ice cream

$0.50 each: goldfish crackers, cheese stick, small bottle of water, milk

$0.75 each: whole wheat cookies, Scooby Snacks, fruit roll up

WHS announces UTSC students (K-12) get in FREE to all high school athletic events when they show their student ID at the gate or wear bearcat colors.

Elementary Wresting is 6-7pm Tuesdays September through October. These are free workouts for kids getting into wrestling or continuing to wrestle. If you have any questions, contact Coach Cook at jcook@union.k12.in.us

From Indiana Department of Education:

Earlier this month, we launched our newest feature in the Indiana Learning Lab: The Parent & Family Support Hub! The Indiana Learning Lab, first launched in 2021 to support our educators, has now grown to more than 44,000 users. As student and educator needs evolve, the Learning Lab is evolving as well. The new Parent and Family Hub was launched as a way to support parents and families of students in early learning through grade 12.

The platform will feature vetted websites, videos, workshops, and other content focused on literacy and STEM instruction, in particular. These resources will be available to parents 24/7, allowing them to access the content whenever it is most convenient for them and their family.

Our IDOE team is also currently planning several September sessions in the Learning Lab to provide information to families, as well as educators, about the Dolly Parton Imagination Library…and the important role that parents and families play in supporting their children to read (ex. ensuring your child reads 30 minutes per day).
