We would like to congratulate everyone who took the FSA this week! We know these assessments are not easy but we do know you are prepared for success! We would also like to wish the student taking the AP Exams next week the best of luck, we are certain you will succeed greatly! We would like to remind those who have students in grades seven through eleven that all 2018-2019 Emergency Contact Forms will be due by May 31, 2018 which is the last day of the 2017-2018 School Year. If you are in need of a new form, you will find it in the link below. Please be advised that all Lynx Lane campus students will need to submit a business envelope and stamp in order for your 2017-2018 Report Cards and Test Scores to be mailed home. If you have any questions please contact Mrs. Sturm.

This past weekend our NHS/NJHS Team attended the Annual "Relay for Life Event"! Our charter has been working hard all year on a number of outstanding events, and we could not be prouder! We would also like to take this time and celebrate our Drama Departments Production of Disney's Beauty and the Beast. Our Drama Department, which includes the cast, their directors and all of our parent volunteers have worked hard throughout this year. The production was huge success and we are excited to watch them continue to grow!

Each year our Clock Work Mania Robotics Team continues to raise the bar, and this year was no exception! We are excited to share with you below their 2017-2018 Recap which includes multiple accomplishments and even more awards! Congratulations to the Clock Work Mania Team and their sponsors on another wonderful year!

The following details found below are important as we approach the end of our current school year. Please read each of the items below carefully and let me know if you have any questions, note any item featuring an * at the end of the title is required in order to receive your student’s 2018-2019 Schedule at Open House.

• Upcoming 7th Grade Immunization Documents*: Original Copy due to School Registrar by Open House.
  
• New Address*: If you have moved, you must fill out the first two pages of the 2018-2019 Enrollment document. An original copy of your lease must be brought to the school registrar before school starts. You will also need a correct proof of Orange County Domicile. You will find these pages on www.orlandoscience.org àSelect the “Enrollment Form” button located on the navy blue bar on the left hand side of the webpageàselect the “Enrollment Forms” link. Please note you will only need pages one and two.
• 2018-2019 Emergency Contact Form*: Please be advised that ALL STUDENTS will be required to turn in a “2018-2019 Emergency Contact Form”. These forms are not optional; if the form is not supplied to OSS by open house your student may not be given their 2018-2019 Class Schedule. Please note this form is found on page five and six of the enrollment document. Forms may be returned to your student’s homeroom teacher or Mrs. Sturm(RM 124).You will find this form on www.orlandoscience.org àSelect the “Enrollment Form” button located on the navy blue bar on the left hand side of the webpageàSelect the “Enrollment Forms” Link. Please note you will only need pages Five and Six.

• Medication and Medical Supplies Pick Up: ALL medication and medical supplies that are located at the front office with Mrs. Foley must be picked up by May 30th 2018. Any medications or medical supplies not picked up this date will be properly disposed of.
  
• Blank Business Envelope and Stamp required: We will be mailing your student’s state test scores and final report cards once they arrive to you over the summer. It is advised that every student bring in a blank business envelope, stamp and slip found on page two before May 30th 2018. Please do not self -address the envelope, Mrs. Sturm will take care of that for you. If a blank business envelope and stamp are not provided by May 30th 2018 then you will have to pick up your student’s test scores and final report cards at OSS when they arrive.
  
• After Care Forms*: Please note that for the 2018-2019 School Year ALL students will be required to fill out the “After Care Forms” located in the Enrollment Forms section of the website, regardless if students will be utilizing the After Care Service. . You will find these pages on www.orlandoscience.org àselect the “Enrollment Form” button located on the navy blue bar on the left hand side of the webpageàselect the “After Care Forms” link.
• First Day of School: The First Day of School for the 2018-2019 School Year is Monday August 13th 2018
• Locker and Lost and Found Clean Out: Please be advised that all items must be collected from the Lost and Found Locations (GYM, Cafeteria, and Dismissal Door) and in your student’s lockers by May 30th 2018. Any items remaining after this date will be donated or properly disposed of.
• ADDitions Volunteers: Please make sure to update your accounts over the summer as they expire every year. Parents, Guardians and other family members will not be eligible to volunteer or chaperone any school sponsored function unless these accounts are in current standings.

Dear Orlando Science Family,

We are excited to announce that Orlando Science Middle/High School will be visited by an external review team from AdvancED on May 20th through May 22nd. This two-day process will focus on 11 STEM Indicators as the school is seeking to receive certification as a STEM school.

A team of visiting professionals representing the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) Council on Accreditation and School Improvement (CASI) will evaluate our adherence to the 11 AdvancED STEM Indicators.

The duties of the team will include observing and reviewing routine functions and operations of our school, reviewing the 11 STEM indicators’ artifacts and meeting with groups of stakeholders (students, parent/community members, faculty, staff, and administrators).

We are excited to show our successful practices in STEM education to the review team. We also look forward to receiving their professional feedback regarding the areas of improvement as part of our growth in STEM education.

Attention Orlando Science Families!

Although we typically follow the OCPS Schedule, we will still have our regular Early Dismissal Schedule every Wednesday.
Students in Grades 7th and 8th will be released at their normal Wednesday time of 1:44 PM and students in grades in 9th and 12th will be released 1:48 PM.

OSS Drama Club performed their production of Disney's Beauty and the Beast this past Sunday at the beautiful Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts. After three months of rehearsing, making props, gathering costumes, and bringing all of the pieces of the play together, the performance was a great success! For many of the cast and crew, this was their first production while a few others were more seasoned. Special thanks to Mrs. Harper and Ms. Estes for directing the play with students and providing them a unique experience. Also to Mr. I, Mrs. Frunker, Ms. Felicano, Mr. Jenkins, and the Dr. Phillips staff. OSS is very proud of everyone and all of their hard work and dedication. Keep an eye out for the DVD coming in the next few weeks!

In December, Mrs. Frunker’s 7th grade students participated in a writing contest where students had to write a short essay of what they would do if they were elected Mayor sponsored by the Florida League of Mayors and the Florida League of Cities. Over 3,000 entries were received and the 4 students pictured below were recognized for their excellent entries.

Orlando Science Schools’ FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC) team 4013 Clockwork Mania participated in the FIRST Championship in Houston, Texas from April 18th to April 21st, 2018. Participation at the championship is the highlight of the team’s season and allows the students to interact with more than 400 other teams from around the World creating new friendships and memories.

Clockwork Mania had a great run this year by winning the two highest awards any team can win in FRC, the Engineering Inspiration and Chairman’s Awards, both of which earned the team an invitation to the FIRST Championship. The Engineering Inspiration Award celebrates outstanding success in advancing respect and appreciation for engineering within a team’s school or organization and community. The Chairman’s Award is the most prestigious award at FIRST and it honors the team that best represents a model for other teams to emulate and best embodies the purpose and goals of FIRST. It was created to keep the central focus of FRC on the ultimate FIRST goal; transforming the culture in ways that will inspire greater levels of respect and honor for science and technology, as well as encouraging more of today’s youth to become scientists, engineers, and technologists.

The team also participates in the FIRST Tech Challenge competition as teams 5070 N.U.T.S. and 6379 Clockwork Mania. N.U.T.S. attended the Florida State Championship earning the Motivate Award and an invitation to the South Super Regional in Athens, Georgia where they were awarded the Judges Award for their projects with the community.

Clockwork Mania was represented at the FIRST Championship by Bradley B., Dennis B., Saardhak B., Hector C., Jacob H., Jordan H., Gwen H., Minh L., Zachary M., Nathan N., Ethen O., Rebecca P., Keshan P., Peter P., Badri P., Esha R., Kevin R., Pierce S.-T., Eashan S., Christina T., David V., and Ryan V.

May is National Physical Fitness and Sports Month! To celebrate and encourage physical activity, the PE department is hosting a week of after school activities that will be between 3- 4:30. All proceeds will go to the PE department. Sign up for activities with Mrs. Mulligan!

On Friday, April 27, 2018, the National Junior and National Honor Society students participated in the Relay for Life event held at Edgewater High School. Over seventy students participated in the event and Orlando Science team raised over $2,000 for this worthy cause. At the event, students were in charge of decorating our sites, participating in different themed laps, running game booths, solving challenging puzzles, and selling different types of concessions. Other fundraising activities included a middle school dance, Teacher appreciation cupcake sales, pancake breakfast, dress down week, Kona Ice, and soda grams. Thank you to all students, staff, and parents who participated in these events and helped our Relay for Life team reach our fundraising goal. We are so proud of all of the students who took part in this event and we thank them for all of their hard work. We look forward to next year’s Relay for Life event.

Orlando Science will host their first Improv Night on May 15th 2018 beginning at 5:30PM. Ms. Estes is looking for four to five volunteers to help assist with concession sale and admissions. Please contact her if you have any questions. MUST BE ADDITIONS APPROVED.

A Message from the Counselor

Greetings All!

As a school counselor, I receive many e-mails/calls from parents wanting to know what they can do to help their child succeed. Here are a few basic tips!

Expectations

Expect your child to succeed, and their chances for success improve greatly. Expect them to come up short, and the odds are that they will. Children are very aware of how their parents view them, and they often tailor their actions to those views. Communicate your expectations and your rationale behind them to your child. It’s important to base your expectations on your child, not yourself. Remember each child is an individual who has strengths and weaknesses like all individuals.

Environment/Schedule

Create a suitable environment for homework. Make sure your child has a quiet, well-lit place to study. If you do not have internet access at home, please inform the school, they can help brainstorm about ways to get around this roadblock. Create, with your child, a daily schedule. They should study or do homework every day (except for special family events, of course) no more than two hours per day. Be available during homework time to look over homework and give suggestions, but never do your child’s homework for them. Be interested and have them teach you something. Teaching someone else a concept is one of the best ways to learn!

Balance

Academic success is important when it comes to our children. However, teaching our kids how to balance their individual well-being while succeeding academically is also an important skill. This skill of balancing wellness and work is one that can carry them forward into their adult lives. Kids have very little control over their lives. Please don’t pack their schedules full of after school activities without their knowledge. Children of every age need time to relax, play, workout, and take a brain break after their very rigorous school day. Together, choose a couple of activities per week that help them follow their passions or interests. Make sure it fits in your schedule and that you still have time to do schoolwork and enjoy family time.

Lastly, attitude is everything! Consider your attitude about learning new concepts or following directions at your place of work. Keep in mind, children hear everything, and they learn from you daily!

Dinner is a choice of Meat (Halal ground beef, red sauce, ricotta and mozzarella cheese) or Vegetarian Lasagna, (grilled zucchini and squash, red bell pepper, red sauce, ricotta and mozzarella cheese) bread sticks, unlimited salad, dessert and drink. Teachers and staff are complimentary, guests are $5 adults and $3 ages 10 and under.

OSS FACE PAINTING CLUB

The OSS Face Painting Club was established spring of 2017 and continues to gauge interest from students in all grade levels. Club members participate in various events throughout the year such as the Fall Festival, Halloween Dance Party, Model UN Day, Science Fair/STEM Art Day, and Earth Day. The club is open to both middle and high school students. This club is a great way to bring joy to others and encourages students to build self-esteem while honing their own skill set. The students work on the basics of blending and line quality that is then combined to create unique designs.

The Orlando Science School Band Program is selling Cherrydale chocolate bars as a fundraiser to purchase much-needed instruments and supplies. They come in 6 mouth-watering varieties, which includes milk chocolate, milk chocolate with almond, milk chocolate with caramel, milk chocolate crisp, milk chocolate with peanut butter, and dark chocolate. They are being raved about those who have purchased so far, so we know that you will enjoy them, too! They are being sold through the Orca Store, as well as by band students around the school. If any parents are interested in making a direct or bulk purchase, or with helping the band program out with their fundraising, please contact Mr. Jenkins .Thank you for your continued support!

Each day our Orcas will be given a "STEM Word of the Day" and at the end of each week, students may submit a list of the words given to be entered to win a free dress down day! We like to find ways to communicate with parents to support our mutual involvement in your child’s education. As part of OSS tradition, we are organizing home visits as a way to reach out to our families and get to know them better. We would like to set up a time for a few of your students teachers to have a brief 20-30 minute home visit. Home visits are an effective way to establish positive contact and communication with families. They are not a replacement for parent-teacher conferences, but are a process through which teachers demonstrate their support for students’ families by visiting the home environment where the family feels comfortable. Home visits originate from a sincere desire to assist and work with families. We will be glad to visit you and your child at a convenient time. If you would like to host a home visit, please select one of the days below. We will be organizing quarterly home visits. If you are not available during first quarter, you always can choose a day later on in the school year. We look forward to visiting you!
