Tuesday, May 4th through Friday, May 14th are two important weeks as we administer the seven remaining STAAR/EOC assessments. The first of these assessments is the Algebra EOC, which is scheduled for Tuesday, May 4th to all students enrolled in the Algebra PAP course (typically 7th and 8th graders). Students will have 4 hours to take this paper assessment at Vandeventer Middle School. All STAAR testing guidelines have been fully explained to students through daily announcements and classroom presentations. Our students and teachers have worked very hard this year, and we are confident your student has mastered the skills necessary to be successful.

Please review these important reminders to ensure a positive testing experience for your student taking the Algebra EOC.

Expectations for F2F and VA 8th Grade Students Enrolled in 8th Grade Math, Geometry, Algebra II PAP:

• F2F 8th grade students enrolled in 8th grade math, Geometry, and Algebra II PAP will NOT report to campus on Tuesday, May 4th and will participate in asynchronous instruction for periods 1-8.

• VA 8th grade students enrolled in 8th grade math, Geometry, and Algebra II PAP will remain home on Tuesday, May 4th and participate in asynchronous instruction for periods 1-8.

• Attendance for F2F and VA students enrolled in 8th grade math, Geometry, and Algebra II PAP will be taken via a google link that will be sent out the morning of testing, Tuesday, May 4th. Students must complete the link by 2 p.m. to receive attendance credit for the day. Attendance is not tied to the completion of assignments.

Expectations for ALL Algebra PAP Students:

• Morning attendance will be taken once all students have reported to their designated testing locations. Students testing will be counted present all day, but will be expected to participate in asynchronous instruction after testing (Viking Time, 7th, 8th Period).

• Please do not schedule doctor or dentist appointments on testing days.

• Make certain your child gets plenty of rest, eats a good breakfast, and arrives on time.

• Students may bring a water bottle, but no snacks will be permitted during testing.

• Students should bring two #2 pencils and a book to read after testing.

• Calculators will be provided for all testers.

• Cell phones, cell phone watches, and all electronic devices are banned from classrooms, hallways and restrooms during testing administration. Devices will be collected from all students by testing proctors. Students will be instructed to power off their device before relinquishing it to the testing proctor.

• No fast food deliveries or other drop offs will be permitted, and the campus will be closed to visitors.

• Students DO NOT need to bring their personal or school-issued Chromebooks to testing. Students will be administered a paper assessment.

• Students who have extra time for state testing will need to bring a sack lunch or one will be provided by the school cafeteria. Students with extra-time will check out via the front office once testing is complete.

Information for Face-to-Face Algebra PAP Students ONLY:

• Students will enter the building at their regular entrance by 8:15 a.m. (normal procedures) and report to their testing room. Testing room locations will be communicated to students and will be posted in the grade level hallways prior to testing.

• 7th graders @ 7th grade hall entrance

• 8th graders @ tennis court entrance

• After testing, all Algebra PAP 8th grade students will be dismissed from the 8th grade hallway doors on the west side of the campus and may be picked up at that location by a parent/guardian to participate in asynchronous instruction for periods 7 and 8. Mass dismissal and parent/guardian pick-up will be from 12:45 p.m. - 1 p.m. You may view the pick-up and drop-off locations at this link.

• After testing, all Algebra PAP 7th grade students will be dismissed from their testing location for lunch at 1:00 p.m. 7th grade students will eat C lunch in the cafe before reporting to Viking Time, 7th period, and 8th period.

• Attendance will be taken following normal procedures during 7th and 8th period classes for 7th grade Algebra PAP students.

Information for Virtual Academy Algebra PAP Students ONLY:

• VA students (7th and 8th grade Algebra PAP) will enter and check-in at the cafeteria entrance no later than 8:15 a.m. Staff members will assist students in finding their testing room assignment and location, which will be sent to VA students electronically prior to testing.

• VA students (7th and 8th grade Algebra PAP) will be testing in designated rooms in the 8h grade hallway.

• After testing, all VA students (7th and 8th grade Algebra PAP) will be dismissed from the 8th grade hallway doors on the west side of the campus and may be picked up in the designated locations indicated with 7th and 8th grade signage. Mass dismissal and parent/guardian pick-up will be from 12:45 p.m. - 1 p.m. You may view the pick-up and drop-off locations at this link.

• VA students (7th and 8th grade Algebra PAP) will participate in asynchronous instruction for periods 7 and 8.

• Modified Rotation Schedule (May 6, May 7, May 12): Group assignments and locations will be communicated to students prior to testing.

• Regular Schedule (May 4, May 13): Students will follow their normal class schedule.

• Students must bring their technology in order to participate in the instructional activities.

• Lunch times will vary due to the testing schedule. Students may bring a lunch or one will be provided by the school cafeteria.

• No fast food deliveries or other drop offs will be permitted.

• On schedule testing day, the campus will be closed to visitors.

• Afternoon dismissal will follow normal procedures.

Congratulations to Ryan Lee! Ryan is the first place winner in the State of Texas Junior Chemistry division for the science fair. He has also been nominated for the 2021 Broadcom MASTERS® (Math, Applied Science, Technology and Engineering for Rising Stars), a program of Society for Science. Only the top 10% of middle school projects nationwide are invited to apply online for the national competition. Just receiving a nomination is a huge honor and amazing achievement! These talented singers have been selected as members of the 2020-21 All-Region Choir! Each student had to prepare advanced choral music and submit a solo audio audition (wanna see what the music looks like?) A panel of judges ranked their performance based on accuracy, musicality, diction & vocal tone and chose the top 30 singers from each voice part to create this special honor choir. A special shout-out to Abhineeth & Trisha who made the Region Choir for the 2nd year! Congratulations to Mrs. Cotten and all of our All-Region Choir students!

Vandeventer Middle School Varsity Orchestra, Advanced Symphonic Orchestra, submitted a recording last week for UIL Concert and Sight-reading Evaluation. Three judges scored us on our "Concert" or "Stage" performance with the highest rating possible. Three separate judges also scored our "Sight-reading" portion with the highest rating possible! Due to these six judges rating Vandeventer Orchestra with top scores, our recording resulted in a "Sweepstakes" Award.

Frisco ISD has also once again been recognized by the NAMM Foundation as one of the Best Communities for Music Education for 2021! This is a tremendous honor that recognizes the work that music teachers do each day. This rigorous selection process considers music education from all angles – not just what is being done in the classroom, but how it is accomplished and, more importantly why strong support exists.

Simply stated, our community supports music education because they see the value in what it provides to every child! Thankful to work and teach in FISD!

The Frisco Police Department offers young people the opportunity to experience law enforcement firsthand through the Junior Police Academy (JPA). There is NO COST to students who wish to attend the academy. Students will learn the basic functions of a working police department, as well as have a chance to learn about a career in law enforcement. Students will have the opportunity to meet members of the Frisco Police Special Operations Unit (SWAT), 911 Operators, School Resource Officers, Crime Scene Investigators, Bike Unit, K9 Unit, Jail Staff, and Motorcycle Unit. JPA transforms the traditional role of the police officer into one of mentor and friend while encouraging youth to be partners in building a safer community.

JPA is open to students who live in Frisco or students who attend Frisco ISD schools. Students must be currently enrolled in the 6th or 7th grade at the date of application. Spaces in the academy classes are limited and cadet selection will be divided evenly to accommodate all 17 FISD middle schools. Application requirements include parental permission and medical release forms.

The Junior Police Academy will be held at Lawler Middle School 12921 Rolater Road in Frisco. Each academy is 4 days long, 8:30 AM - 4:30 PM. There is no cost to students who wish to attend the academy. Students must have their own transportation to and from the academy and must be picked up by 4:30 PM.

All cadet applicants must be able to pass a thorough background check and have no behavior or discipline issues at school. Once JPA Coordinators receive the application and it is approved, a confirmation letter with additional information will be sent to the email provided on the application. Confirmation letters will not be sent out until early May.

This week, the Texas Education Agency recommended that schools continue to require masks despite the Governor’s removal of a statewide mask mandate. Frisco ISD will maintain the same face covering requirements that have been in place all school year. As a reminder, the guidelines state that staff, visitors and students will wear face coverings while at school and on buses, including in classrooms, except when campus protocols specifically permit their removal.

Please reference this letter sent earlier today by the District for additional information. Online Frequently Asked Questions have also been updated.

Infosnap codes for students who are enrolled in Frisco ISD as of April 8th will go out to families the week of May 3rd. Registration questions can be directed to ISRegistration@friscoisd.org. At that time, the Laserfiche POR submission link will be active for parents to submit a proof of residence for 2021-2022.

Vision and hearing screenings for our F2F 7th grade students were conducted on March 5th. Spinal screenings for 7th grade girls and 8th grade boys were conducted on March 29th. Virtual students in these grade levels missed these screenings. If you would like to have your student screened, please contact Nurse Teeling to set up an appointment. These screenings are also applicable to any of our new to FISD students in 6th-8th grades who do not fall into the above categories. If your student has been screened by their physician, please contact your child's doctor, and submit the results of these screenings to Nurse Teeling at teelingh@friscoisd.org. Screenings will be conducted through the month of April.

The Texas School Safety Center (TxSSC) Youth Safety Summit is a three-day virtual event designed to educate and inspire youth seeking to become leaders in school safety. Students in grades 8-12 will have the opportunity to develop and expand their knowledge through workshops and skills clinics, as well as to connect with other youth across the state. Participants will leave with an action plan for implementing a project of their choice in their school or community.

The TxSSC Youth Safety Summit is a free event which will be held virtually (through Zoom) June 15th - 17th from 10:00am-2:30pm. The summit will be hosted by the TxSSC, in collaboration with Extreme Youth Leadership.

Participant registration applications will be reviewed to determine acceptance to the summit. Each participant will be required to submit a letter of support, along with a parental permission form. The letter of support must come from a teacher, counselor, club sponsor, school resource officer, coach, etc. This letter should provide information about the participant’s character, qualities, and achievements.

The registration application deadline is Friday, May 14th. Each participant will be notified by Friday, May 28th of the status of their registration application. After evaluating our athletics protocols and current COVID-19 trends, spectators attending outdoor athletic events will no longer be required to wear face coverings/masks when maintaining 6 feet distance for other people. The district continues to recommend spectators wear appropriate face coverings for the safety of the athletes and spectators. Coaches and athletes will be required to wear a mask during times when they are unable to maintain 6 feet distance from others, such as, when shoulder to shoulder in a dugout or soccer shelter. The district will continue to monitor COVID-19 activity and may reverse this decision if case trends warrant.

We will still ask parents to arrive a few minutes prior to their student's game/event and leave the stadium immediately after it's completed to allow for social distancing. We will be evaluating stadium capacities in the upcoming days/weeks and may adjust those as well depending on our circumstances.

In order to provide the safest and most orderly environment possible at VMS sporting events, please adhere to the following rules:

• Parents should only purchase their allotted number of tickets (up to 3). Attendance at games should be limited to families of participants only. Sharing codes or purchasing more than what is allowed may hinder other families from attending games and could result in a loss of privilege of attending games.

• Family groups should sit together, but 6 feet from other family groups.

• Masks are encouraged at outdoor events, especially if unable to stay 6 feet apart.

• Families, including younger siblings, should not have the following items or similar items with them: football, soccer ball, tennis ball, volleyball, skateboard, scooter, etc. The items may be confiscated until the end of the event and individuals will be asked to return to their seats.

• Families, including younger siblings, should remain in the stands to watch the games.

• Family conduct should promote sportsmanship and reflect our team in a positive and respectful manner. Conversations should be appropriate and profanity is prohibited.

We ask for your continued support in creating a safe environment for our athletes during the pandemic. Potential risks for your family are also a risk for the VMS community. Please consider the following:

• Keep your student home if symptoms are noticed.

• Be forthcoming regarding exposure, potential exposure, or illness with your student and/or family member.

• Be wise with social activity and follow recommendations from the CDC and Health Department. Social activities away from school continue to impact the campus.

We would like to reiterate the importance and expectation of attendance for our virtual academy students. Please make sure your student is adhering to the following expectations:

• Follow the campus bell schedule
• Attend all classes virtually (i.e. Zoom or Google Meets)
• Participate in virtual classes by keeping the CAMERA ON (the teacher needs to see the student's face)
• Stay on the required virtual session until the teacher dismisses the class for asynchronous assignments
• Complete all assignments as directed by the teacher

Virtual students are expected to adhere to all compulsory attendance laws, district policy and campus expectations. Failure to follow these attendance guidelines will be considered a violation of law, and students will be subject to disciplinary action.

As a reminder, Frisco ISD schools will notify parents and staff on a weekly, rather than daily, basis if a student or staff member who was on campus during the infectious period tests positive for COVID-19. Parents and community members can continue to track new daily case reports on the District’s COVID-19 dashboard once the dashboard returns Jan. 6. This change applies only to the general email notification of a COVID-19 case on campus; students and staff who were in close contact with the positive individual will continue to be notified as soon as possible regarding their potential exposure and need to quarantine. Keep in mind these east tips on ways we can stop the spread as a community:

• Maintain 6 feet of distance when possible and wear a mask that covers the nose and mouth
• Wash your hands often or use hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol
• Screen your student daily prior to school for signs and symptoms of illness
• Keep your student home if an undiagnosed symptom or illness is noticed
• Be wise with social activity and follow recommendations from the CDC and local health service authorities

Please use this link to schedule your lunch visitation. Due to social distancing guidelines, there is a two family minimum for each lunch time.

• Parents will be allowed to eat lunch with their student(s) during the fall semester; however, we are asking parents to notify the administration as least 24 hours in advance.
  
• Parents/guardians are NOT allowed to bring food and/or eat lunch with students other than their own.
• Social-distancing guidelines will be strictly enforced in the cafeteria.
• There will be tables designated for parents eating lunch with their students(s).
• Parents/guardians MUST check-in at the front office to receive a visitor badge.
• Parents/guardians must comply with campus expectations regarding face coverings and social-distancing.
• Students may still receive lunch drop-offs via the grade level coolers/buckets placed outdoors in front of the cafeteria entrance.
