The Cardinal Letter
1.23.24 Edition
Message from Principal Goodman
January 2024
Dear Parents and Guardians,
We made it to the midpoint of this academic year, and we're excited to share our school's commitment to redefining readiness for our high school students. At Chippewa Falls Senior High School, we firmly believe that preparing for the future extends far beyond grades and test scores. It's about empowering our students with a diverse set of skills and mindsets essential for success in an ever-evolving world.
Our focus on redefined readiness encompasses fostering adaptability, critical thinking, collaboration, and resilience among our students. Through innovative learning experiences, real-world applications, and opportunities for self-discovery, we aim to equip them with the tools needed to thrive beyond the confines of traditional academics. We encourage students to explore their passions, engage with diverse perspectives, and embrace challenges as opportunities for growth.
As partners in this journey, we invite you to join us in supporting this holistic approach to readiness. Together, let's continue nurturing well-rounded individuals who are not just academically prepared but also equipped with the skills and mindset to tackle the complexities of tomorrow's world.
Thank you for entrusting us with your student's education and growth.
Warm regards,
Mrs. Donna Goodman

BARR Data
Academic and behavioral data has been collected since the BARR model was introduced to Chi-Hi. Below is the graph representing the number of freshmen students with one or more failing grades each quarter from 2020-present. We have had a significant decrease in failures since the implementation of the BARR program.
As part of BARR, students are recognized for their growth, positive attitude and transition to Chi-Hi. This year’s honorees for the first two quarters are pictured below are:
Q1: Mya Johnson, Kimberly Xiong, Jerney Joles and Lincoln Sedlacek.
Q2: Mason Johnson, Aubray Werle, Jacob Torkelson and Caleb Dallas.
Chi Hi's Green Team Spearheads Solar Initiative to Power HOPE Village
The Green Team, consisting of Isabella Biederman, Maddie Hunt, and Kam Glamann.
In a bold step toward sustainability, the Green Team is leading an ambitious grant writing effort to secure funding from three key sources — the Energy Innovation Grant Program (EIGP), Solar for Good, and the Solar Moonshot initiative. They were recently notified that they were awarded two out of the three grants. Their collective aim is to install a cutting-edge 40kW photovoltaic (PV) system at HOPE Village, a local homeless shelter comprising 11 tiny homes and a community resource center.
This comprehensive PV system will entirely fulfill the energy needs of HOPE Village, revolutionizing the shelter's environmental impact and operational efficiency. The Green Team's vision extends beyond energy generation; it aligns with a commitment to environmental stewardship and responsible community engagement.
Notably, the grant proposal includes provisions for an emergency backup battery system dedicated to the community resource center. This addition ensures uninterrupted power supply during emergencies, safeguarding vital services for the families relying on HOPE Village.
The collaboration with EIGP, Solar for Good, and Solar Moonshot underscores the holistic approach of the Green Team towards sustainable solutions. By pooling resources from these diverse funding channels, they aim to set a new standard for eco-friendly initiatives within homeless shelters across the state and the nation.
This grant proposal marks a pivotal moment in HOPE Village's journey towards sustainability and resilience. The Green Team's efforts will not only illuminate the lives of those within the shelter but also serve as a source of inspiration for community-driven renewable energy projects.
FBLA Member news
Hope Village Project
Over the past couple of months, FBLA has been working with Hope Village to support their mission and tiny homes. We worked alongside DECA to host the Strides4Hope 5k in November, raising $1,200. Additionally, our chapter went on a tour of Hope Village to view the tiny homes and community center to learn more about this project and how homelessness affects our community.
We also were able to donate a variety of new small appliances which are to be used in the tiny homes and can be taken with the family to help them get started as they move on to their next living arrangements. We will continue supporting Hope Village by hosting a small appliance drive accepting gently used or new appliances and by educating others about the impact of homelessness on our community and how they can support Hope Village.
Business Tours on December 9, 2023
FBLA members visited many businesses to explore how businesses are run and the different career pathways. These businesses consisted of:
- Fire Station 1 in which we learned how the funding of our emergency services worked.
- Another is Northwestern Bank which taught us about the importance of money and how a bank operates with its complex security systems.
- A business near the bank is Eevy Ivy Over, which is a flower and gift shop that educates students on how a small business operates compared to a larger one.
- Loopy’s Grill and Saloon was another stop FBLA visited that informed them on how the food business works and how Loopy turned it into what it is today.
Financial Literacy Lesson
Our members visited several first and second grade classrooms to present a lesson on saving, spending, and giving money. During this lesson, high school students read The Four Money Bears by Mac Gardner. The elementary students made their own piggy banks as an activity so they could save at home and talk to their parents/guardians about what they should do with their money. During a class discussion, students expressed what they learned from the lesson. Many first and second graders benefited and expanded their knowledge on money.

A Win for Chi-Hi
Make48 is a national prototyping competition recently held at the University of Stout where teams were presented with a challenge and tasked to build a physical prototype, create a sales sheet, produce a 1-minute marketing video and pitch their big idea to a panel of judges. The Chi-Hi Robotic team's entry, Boards and Bots won $2,000 for their first-place design. Elleana Kenney, Brett Schaeffer and Megan Schutte of Chippewa Falls High School were each awarded a $1,000 scholarship to UW-Stout. The team was coached by Everett Sarauer, a process engineer with TTM Technologies in Chippewa Falls, which sponsored Boards n’ Bots.
