On Thursday, February 23, the CASE program received some very special furry visitors. As part of their end of the trimester PBIS reward, the CASE classrooms enjoyed a morning with Love on a Leash, a pet therapy program. Love on a Leash brings comfort, happiness, and healing people nationwide by using pet-provided therapy.
On Friday February 17th, our cougar code winners got to have breakfast with the principal. The breakfast was to congratulate our cougar code winners who have gone above and beyond to follow the cougar code. Two students from each classroom where nominated for this event and family members where even in attendance.
At the Oak Lawn-Hometown School District 123 Board of Education meeting on February 27, 2023, the Board of Education approved Ms. Ashley Holland as the new principal of Covington Elementary school. Ms. Holland brings a wealth of experience and expertise to the role, having spent the last 20 years in the south suburbs as a teacher, principal, and district office administrator.
OLHMS scholars took a field trip to IMSA (Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy) on Wednesday, February 22nd to learn more about their state of the art learning spaces. OLHMS Counselor, Vanessa Follmar, spearheaded the field trip for 40 of OLHMS' students. Mrs. Follmar first learned about IMSA while preparing for the first high school fair.
On Valentine's Day, our Erika's Lighthouse Teen Empowerment Club, sponsored by OLHMS counselors Mrs. Vanessa Follmar and Colleen Hoeksema, had a special treat and spread the love to all OLHMS students. Students involved in Erika's Lighthouse wanted every student at OLHMS to receive something this Valentine's Day.
At Hannum Elementary, we don't only build community in the classroom, but we build community throughout the entire school. Our PBIS team has buddied classrooms together for our trimester celebrations. Kindergarten buddies with third grade, first grade buddies with fourth grade, and second grade buddies with fifth grade.
Two years ago, when there was still so much unknown about covid, students were not allowed to pass out valentines. Through this somewhat sad event, a great tradition began! Kolmar teachers took to technology to make sure everyone still felt the love on Valentine's Day, and now it has become a Valentine's Day tradition in 2nd grade!
The 5th graders in Ms. Lettiere's class completed a biography research project last month honoring famous African Americans for Black History Month. Ms. Lettiere provided students with a choice of about 50 famous African Americans to research, some of these famous people were still alive and students had interest in learning more about them or maybe they had no idea who the person was and wanted to investigate further.
