Many of you know that we are a math goal school. This is our third year working on this goal. Our staff has read the book, Building Thinking Classrooms in Mathematics, which provides several ideas and strategies to excel in math. One of our strategies is using non-permanent vertical surfaces to problem solve on. This is a great way for students to get up and talk and think about math. When students work on these surfaces, they are focused on the “math thinking” without the risk of getting the wrong answer – this greatly reduces math anxiety.
École Vickers School Art Group 2022-2023
Who: Any students from Grades 5 – 8
When and Where: Tuesdays from 3:15 – 4:30 in the Art Room, beginning Tuesday, October 4th.
Commitment Level: Art Group is a drop in group that runs for most of the school year. No regular commitment is required.
What: In Art Group we will create projects based on the four strands of art – dance, drama, music and visual art – with an emphasis on visual art. Students will have creative freedom to design their own projects as well as improve their art skills and learn new techniques. It’s a fun and relaxing environment and we’d love to see you there!
Please feel free to contact Mrs. Hoey-Seto through Edsby or at ehoeyseto@srsd119.ca for more information.
If your child wishes to participate, he/she can see Mrs. Hoey-Seto in the Art Room to get a permission form.

Grade 5 Band Students
Mrs. Lauren Lohneis is excited to be on staff as the new Band/Music teacher at Vickers this year. We are already off to a great start with some fun projects on the horizon!
On September 26th the Grade 5 Band students attended the SRPSD Beginner Band Clinic at Plaza 88. They were separated into instrument-like groups and were then taught by experts on their specific instrument. They learned how to properly assemble and hold their instrument, how to make a good quality sound, how to care for and maintain their instrument, as well as learning how to read some basic notes and rhythms. This clinic was a great way to jump start their learning in Band!
The Vickers Choir is large and strong this year! We are looking forward to our first performance on Wednesday, December 7th when we will be singing O Canada and Christmas carols at the Raider game. Stay tuned for Christmas Concert information for both Band and Choir!
Math Goals 2022-23
École Vickers School Goal: We are excited to have a math goal this year. Currently, our teachers are working on assessing students to see where they are at in math.
Our Sticky Team met to think of fun and engaging ways to make the math goal stick. Stay tuned for “Where’s Victor” in Prince Albert.
Below is our math goal for the 2022-23 school year:
By June 2023 100% of our Grades 1-8 students will be achieving:
· mastery or proficiency standards or
· 50% catch up growth or
· an individualized goal,
in the Number Strand as measured by the Math Common Assessment.
At École Vickers we are excited about math and cannot wait to have fun with numbers!

Pedestrian Safety
Our parking lots are out of bounds for students. We urge parents to support us in this safety endeavor by dropping off their children on the west side of the school on Olive Diefenbaker Drive; on Bradbury Drive, east of the Special Needs bus zone and between Gisi Road and Olive Diefenbaker Drive. We encourage the children to cross all streets in a safe manner by crossing at the corner or at cross walks. Teacher supervision is also provided at our major crosswalks. The Community Club rink parking lot is the bus pick up zone after school and for parents to meet their children for pick up.
We must respect the residents that border the school. Please refrain from turning around in driveways, as this is disruptive to the homeowners.
Bylaw Update
Please be advised that there have been changes made to the Traffic Bylaw which now prohibits U-turns in school zones. In an effort to improve the safety of our children, the City of Prince Albert has added this safety measure. There is a $100 fine for violating this restriction.
Our Vickers’ school zone is between Bradbury Drive and Olive Diefenbaker Drive.
Seven Grandfather Teachings
Seven Grandfathers Teachings
The Creator gave seven Grandfathers, who were very powerful spirits, the responsibility to watch over the people. The Grandfathers saw that people were living a hard life. They sent their helper to spend time amongst the people and find a person who could be taught how to live in harmony with Creation. Their helper went to the four directions to find a person worthy enough to bring to the Grandfathers.
To cherish knowledge is to know Wisdom; To know Love is to know peace;
To honour all of Creation is to have Respect;
Bravery is to face the foe with integrity; Honesty in facing a situation is to be brave; Humility is to know your self as a sacred part
of Creation; Truth is to know all of these things. The Octobers teachings is RESPECT.
