Emergency Information Guide
We are at the midpoint of the school year, and it is hard to believe that we are already heading into the month of February. At this time, I would like to take a moment to share with parents the continuous work of the leadership team to refine our safety protocols. We regularly review our safety measures, provide training to staff and conduct drills in our schools. I would like to share our District’s Emergency Information Guide with you, which highlights our daily security measures and how you can help us keep our schools safe. Please take a moment to peruse this information and keep it accessible as a quick reference guide.
Internet Safety Education
As an educator and parent of teenage daughters, I know how challenging it is for families to navigate the ever-changing landscape of social media and technology. Finding the right balance in providing children with access to the positive benefits, while protecting them from the inherent risks continues to be a daunting task for families. As a district, we have been planning a number of opportunities to educate students and assist parents.
The district is pleased to partner with Scott Driscoll of Internet Safety Concepts to provide a series of informative presentations on Monday, March 13. Mr. Driscoll is former law enforcement officer specializing in cybercrimes, and he will present to students in grades 4 through 12 during the school day regarding internet safety and the responsibilities of using social media safely. The day will culminate in an evening presentation for parents in the Consolidated/Meeting House Cafeteria at 6:30 p.m. We hope to see you there.
Budget
On January 19, I was pleased to present the Superintendent's Recommended Budget to the Board of Education. The recording of the presentation, accompanying slide deck and all budget documents may be found on the main page of the district website. The BOE will hold its third budget workshop this evening at 7 PM in the Senior Center Community Room. The full listing of Board of Education and Board of Finance budget meetings can be found here. We encourage public participation and engagement in the budget process.
Warm regards,
Ken

Superintendent
Consolidated School Music Share
At Consolidated School, all K-2 classes hosted a “music share” to allow parents to see their children sing and dance and demonstrate what they have learned this year, including the ability to write their own music. The "Music Share" is an opportunity to see the songs, activities, and learning that has been taking part over the course of the year. Mr. Akter is a wonderful host and his students performed beautifully! Students sang folk songs and rounds, they played musical games, they sang in French and Spanish, they played hand clapping games and they even created their own music! Thank you, Mr. Akter, for this window into the music classroom!
MHHS Band and Chorus Concert
On Thursday, January 26, Meeting House band and chorus ensembles performed in front of large crowds. Below are a couple of videos highlighting their performances.

NFHS Chamber Singers and NFMS Chorus Join Voices
The high school Chamber Singers came to 8th grade chorus to help the students learn the National Anthem for their performance at the Bridgeport Islanders game and graduation later this year. The singers made connections, learned more about the high school chorus program, and got ready for the game!
The second issue of the Fine Arts Boosters of New Fairfield "Rebel Notes" is published and available! Find out what is happening with all of the arts throughout the district. Click on this link to the full newsletter:

Remembering Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
Mrs. Duffy's first grade class learned about Martin Luther King, Jr. They made the project pictured, each student completing a square independently. The children did not know what they were making. When they built the image together, they discussed how Dr. King taught us if we work together and everyone’s part is equally important, we can create beautiful things!
Grade 6 Middle School students watched a video clip about Martin Luther King. Students formed their own groups, and Mrs. Moran and Lisa Mooney gave each group a quote. On a separate piece of paper, they had to write down what they thought the quote meant and brainstormed other thoughts that came to mind.
Healthy High School Start Time
On January 5, the NFHS Start and End Time BOE Subcommittee resumed discussions regarding a healthier high school start time, which were tabled during the construction of the new high school. The Subcommittee discussed the possibility of shifting the high school start time to 8:00 a.m., beginning with the start of the 2024-25 school year. Public participation and parent perspectives shared at the meeting were greatly appreciated. There will be future opportunities to learn more about this study and provide input into the decision-making process. The next meeting of the BOE subcommittee is on March 2.
The health and learning benefits of a later start time are well documented. The current start time for New Fairfield High School is 7:15 a.m., which is the earliest start time in the region. There are logistical considerations, including but not limited to, transportation, traffic management, budget, and athletics that will need to be addressed throughout the review process.
Please note that the high school school start time change is the only start time change under consideration in this process. In the coming months, you may refer to the quick link at the top of the NFPS website to access any documents, presentations and meeting videos generated in conjunction with this topic.

Buddies Spread Kindness
Mrs. Hannon's 4th grade class and Mrs. Kenny's buddy 2nd grade class got together to read a kindness book and do an activity.
Mrs. Vrba's 4th grade class buddied up with Mrs. Fecci's 1st grade class to sprinkle kindness. Students listened to the book The Jelly Donut Difference - Sharing Kindness with the World by Maria Dismondy. Then, they created donuts and wrote about how they could spread kindness in their community.
Consolidated School and Meeting House Hill School Reading Camp Out
On Friday, January 20th, Consolidated and MHHS Schools hosted two Family Reading Camp Outs. Students and their parents entered the school where they were greeted with a finger flashlight, a photo booth, and smores mix. The first camp out was a sensory-friendly night where the students got to listen to stories by Mrs. Story and Mrs. Dalton under the glow of the stars. During our second reading camp out, the families headed to the cafeteria where they snuggled up with their families on blankets and heard stories read aloud by Mrs. Story, Mr. Groccia, and Dr. Hilderbrand by the “bonfire.” Families then dispersed throughout the cafeteria and library to finish off the camp out by reading books with their families. It was a fantastic night made possible by all the Consolidated and MHHS staff volunteers. We look forward to more events to come.
Ancient Rome's Influence on Today's Society
A Look at Ancient Rome’s Influence on Today’s Society in 7th Grade Social Studies Classes
After conducting research to answer an essential question, students in Paul Laedke's classes participated in a shared inquiry discussion. Additionally, when students were not engaged in conversation, they participated in back channeling (using Padlet) to advance the conversation and provide some feedback.
Striving To Reach Individual & Diverse Educational Success
A day in the life of S.T.R.I.D.E.S. at The Summit from a student’s perspective
Author: Cheyenne Dupre
Upon arrival at The Summit in Danbury first thing in the morning, the team of staff and students meet for a morning meeting, where we debrief about our night, discuss our goals and checklists for the day as well as review worksite assignments including
our co-workers and supervisors.
After the morning meeting, one team heads to the Marketplace Cafeteria where they work on a variety of tasks such as assembling french fry and cake boxes, filling condiments, and the concession stand to name a few. Another team heads off to Good Guys Barbershop where they sweep the barbershop, dry and fold towels, as well as light cleaning of the customer area.
Additionally, a team of workers checks in at Autism Behavioral Health Center where they deliver mail, clean common areas around the program, water plants, as well as create and send daily motivational emails for the staff. Last but not least, a team of students works in the Liberatto’s Cafe where they stock pastries as well as take customer orders and make many yummy drinks!
After working for an hour, students take a short break before heading back to work for the remainder of the morning. Completing another hour of work, students then head back to the STRIDES program to complete the remainder of their day. Busy, Busy, Busy!

Town Broadband Survey
Tired of slow internet service and increasing bills for a service critical to everyday life? New Fairfield is working with the Western Connecticut Council of Governments (WestCoG) to study the feasibility of a town-owned broadband fiber optic network for improved access by both residents and businesses to the internet. While one of our internet providers has announced its intention to provide a fiber offering, competition may be useful to ensure prices and services stay competitive in the future.
We need your input to determine whether New Fairfielders want town-owned fiber optic broadband service. Please take the New Fairfield Broadband Survey, which should take less than 5 minutes. We also need residents to upload their current internet bills to help us determine whether a new offering will be competitive. The following link provides you with more information and will take you to the survey and a place to upload your bills (with ability to mask private information): https://www.newfairfieldfiber.com.
Thanks for your help!
