A Message From Heather Patterson, GRHS Principal
Happy Sunday GRHS Longhorns,
Ready...set....go! We are in full swing of testing season and Senior Season! Please read the reminders below! The 6th six weeks is underway! Only 5 more full weeks, so stay focused on doing your best and making those GR-eat choices.
Let's talk about the CHOICE that needs to stop. We are experiencing major obstacles trying to keep all our bathrooms open during the day because students choose to bring drugs (via vapes) into our school. This is no longer an outlier issue; it is happening way too much. Unfortunately, vapes are not unique to GRHS or even high schools due to mass accessibility from corner stores. They are being found all the way down to elementary schools. Parents, we need your help. These are coming from home and outside the school walls, yet we are the ones having to police them. Many times, getting yelled at or called out on social media because we are not doing enough to stop it. I'm going to be honest, our time needs to be spent on ensuring quality instruction is happening, maintaining the safety and security of the campus, and supporting our staff and your kids to the best of our ability. This is annoying for the MAJORITY of students making the right choices and the administrators trying their best to help your kids with academic concerns, keeping them safe, and giving them access to campus amenities. If this is you, consider yourself warned, there is zero tolerance for it, meaning it must stop. We will need everyone's (parents that is you too) help with this. Jumbo, our LCISD drug dog will be doubling up on his visits throughout the end of the year. Do not bring drugs into this building, or I will be asking your parents to join you in your classes and walk you to the restrooms when needed. Longhorns, we are better than this! It's time to make the right choices and finish strong, your classmates and your health is worth it!
On a positive note, I met with a few student leaders and together we came up with a plan to get our restrooms back to what they are intended for...actually going to the bathroom. If you want to help us keep this vape-free movement going, I am providing the scannable QR code outside every restroom, on the library window, at the student service window, and outside the cafeteria that you can use to make it happen. This past week, with the help of our "fed up" students and staff using the anonymous tip line in real-time, we were able to catch quite a few. Thanks for BEING THE ONE!
Want to help? Here is what I will need on the tip line:
- Name(s) or if you don't know them, a detailed description of what they look like/or what they are wearing.
- Exact time and what bathroom they were in. (We can use cameras to track them down)
- Your name (which will stay anonymous except from admin). If you CHOOSE to help us and we catch them in action, you will be earning a reward. I actually gave out two this past week. Great job!
**ONLY ONE MORE OPPORTUNITY TO TEST!**
Please note, you must have passed the TSIA2 (or other qualifying tests) to be approved to take Dual Credit Classes for 23-24. If you have NOT then your dual credit classes will be dropped! Register today with the QR code below! We will have ONE more opportunity for dual credit students to test on May 15th and 16th. This round of testing is ONLY for students wanting to take dual credit courses for the 2023-2024 school year and we have determined that you don't currently have an acceptable test score for eligibility. Don't be caught off guard when you class is dropped in the Fall.
Please log in and see if you have any fines for the additional IDs you had to buy due to not having yours with you. This is part of your dress code and has been a rule all year, make sure you get it taken care of now. I do not want you caught off guard when your exemptions are NOT approved due to outstanding fees. I have included the directions below. Check today and take care of paying it this week please!
Save the Date: Athletic Physicals - May 15th @ RJH!
Keep BEING THE ONE to wear your ID and be in dress code. This is NOT optional, so there is no need to be disrespectful when we are holding you accountable. Rules are just expected to be followed, whether you agree with them or not. That's life. Your everyday choices matter and that includes your respectful body language and good manners...that I KNOW your parents taught you.
ID Weekly Reminder
ID MUST be worn visibly on the top half of your body EVERY DAY! I announce this EVERY SINGLE MORNING. If you cannot find yours please scan the Blue/Yellow QR code in this newsletter, in the classrooms, or hanging in the front of the school service window to buy one. We will continue to do ID sweeps, and anyone without one will be charged $5 and given a new one. This is NOT optional, as it is part of dress code, but more importantly, a safety measure so we can quickly see who belongs and who does not on campus as well as help someone that may not be conscious due to a medical emergency.
