SPRING SEMESTER UPDATES
Leadership Update
Dear MiraCosta College Community,
Spring semester is underway, and we are excited to see a more bustling campus with more students and faculty back to more in-person teaching and learning! As we start the new semester, let’s inspire hope, ignite imagination, and instill a love of learning.
At MiraCosta College, we strive to provide a learning environment that is both supportive and inspiring, and we are confident that this semester will be no exception. Whether it is through online or in-person instruction, our students have access to the resources and support they need to succeed. Remember that you are not alone, and we have a robust CARE program to help support our students succeed by addressing any challenges they may be experiencing to meet their basic needs such as food, housing, transportation, mental health, childcare, legal aid, etc.
This spring I hope you consider joining your Academic Senate team and serve our institution in the Academic and Professional matters. In addition to the positions of President-Elect and Coordinating Officer, we also have four seats open for full-time faculty Senators, and four seats open for Associate Faculty Senators. Please keep an eye out for an email from the Elections committee during Valentine's week. Tenured full-time faculty, and Associate Faculty members employed for at least five consecutive semesters may run through self or peer nomination. I encourage you to join our team and consider serving in this capacity.
So, let's get started on another great semester at MiraCosta College! We look forward to working together to make this a productive and rewarding time for all.
Best regards,
Leila Safaralian
Academic Senate President

Who's Who On Campus: Q&A with Michael Potterf
The Academic Newsletter team had a chance to get to know our ASG Director of Public Relations, who, in addition to other responsibilities, serves as a liaison between the Associated Student Government (ASG) and the Academic Senate.
- Please share your chosen Academic and Career Pathway (ACP) and your goals for your time at MiraCosta.
My chosen ACP is Creative and Applied Arts. While at MiraCosta I aim to equip myself with skills that directly serve me as a media artist in professional environment. - Can you share with us your experiences and challenges in your role as a student leader?
I hold multiple different roles as a student leader. Operating within these roles has led to immense growth in many areas of my life including communication, leadership, and time/ energy management. Each of these areas of growth come (and continue to come) with their own challenges. From facilitating effective meetings to balancing multiple projects simultaneously, overcoming each of these challenges leads to more and more growth. - What initiatives or projects have you worked on that you are most proud of and why?
As president of the Filmmakers club, I have been happy to help fellow students develop their skills, projects, and transfer applications. - How do you work with other organizations and leaders across campus to achieve common goals?
Frequent communication and time/energy management are the top two things that are necessary for effective collaboration. With these two things, you can ensure that you and your collaborators are on the same page, and take efficient and effective action toward your shared goals. - Can you share with us any future plans or events that you are particularly excited about and why?
As Director of Public Relations for the Associated Student Government, I am currently leading an extremely exciting project in which I and a team of student leaders will hold regular events focused on community building amongst students, clubs, and equity programs on campus. When I ask myself what kind of tangible legacy I want to leave behind, this event serves as my answer. - What do you do to recharge and stay motivated? In other words, what do you do for fun?
I enjoy hearing creative professionals speak in podcasts or keynotes. As well, I like to work on creative projects, especially those in music, photography, and film. However, being able to work and grow with such creative, caring, motivated people and amazing leaders, is what really keeps me going! Other than that, adequate sleep helps...
