Sept. 30, 2022 edition of the BGPS Bulletin

Students at Battle Ground and Prairie high schools are recognizing Hispanic Heritage Month with food, clothing and art. Prairie’s Latino Student Union, led by senior Melody Brizuela, organized a field trip to the Latino Youth Leadership event in Vancouver on Oct. 7, as well as a potluck featuring traditional Hispanic dishes on Oct. 14. At Battle Ground High School, students set up displays around the building featuring flags from Latino countries and information on influential leaders in their community.

“For me, it's just an opportunity to really represent who I am and my culture at this school,” Brizuela said. “Especially since Latinos make up the biggest minority group here at Prairie, it’s important that we’re seen and heard, and that we have a voice too.”

BGPS’ Board of Directors conducted a regular board meeting and budget hearing on Monday, Sept. 26. Highlights are in this week's BG Board, Briefly. Archived video of board meetings is available on the district website. The next regular board meeting will be held on Oct. 10 at 6 p.m.

Congratulations to Battle Ground Public Schools CTE Director Cindy Arnold on being named Region V Administrator of the Year by the Association for Career and Technical Education. Arnold was previously named Administrator of the Year by the state association and is a finalist for the national award at the association's convention in November.

Over the course of her career, Arnold has come to view career and technical education as a continuum that begins early. Her own work experience spans the private sector to kindergarten through community college education. And now Battle Ground Public Schools’ director of career and technical education is in a position to implement CTE classes, programs and principles that benefit students of all ages.

“We should be providing a wide range of learning experiences for all of our students, spanning many different career tracks, fields and industries,” said Arnold. “This type of learning should not be reserved for CTE and seventh through 12th grades alone.”

Battle Ground High School is excited to celebrate 100 years of Tiger football during the Friday, Sept. 30, game against Mount Tahoma at District Stadium. Fans who purchase a special edition 100th anniversary T-shirt from the BGHS ASB office for $12 will receive free admission to the game. There will be special recognition for former Tiger players, including an opportunity for every former player to come on the field at halftime. If you're unable to attend in person to cheer on the Tigers, you can watch the game live via YouTube on the BGTV 27 channel, or on Comcast channel 28/328(HD). Hope to see you there!

Congratulations to Prairie volleyball star Ella Conklin on being voted The Columbian newspaper's Prep Athlete of the Week for week 3! The senior had 16 kills, six blocks, six digs and two aces in a win over Union, then added 15 kills, seven blocks, four digs and an ace in a win over Battle Ground. Conklin received 260 votes from readers of The Columbian. Congratulations Ella!

Battle Ground Education Foundation's Destination Graduation online auction is live now. Bid on exclusive packages donated by local vendors by registering at BGEF.org. This event is one of the largest donation drives of the year for the local nonprofit that helps out thousands of students in Battle Ground each year through their work with the Family and Community Resource Center.
