The Artemis Virtual Academy application window for the 2025-26 school year will be open until May 23, 2025. Families zoned for Huntsville City Schools may apply to Artemis Virtual Academy where students are provided with flexible and individualized educational opportunities.

Leigh Ann Brown, HCS School Counseling Coordinator, provides an overview to parents about course registration for the 2025-2026 school year. Counselors are speaking with students about course selection for both core classes and electives. Watch Course Registration video.

Credit Enhancement registration, which includes Career Prep, Driver's Education, and Health, will open online on April 07, 2025, and will close May 9, 2025. Credit Recovery registration will be done onsite at Huntsville High School Media Center on May 27-29, 2025. Late Registration will be held June 2-5, 2025, from 8:00am - 2:30pm in the Huntsville High School Media Center (located in the main building). Please see the schedule below. Students can only register for a maximum of two courses. Priority will be given to current HCS students.

• Credit Enhancement is for students who need to take Health, Driver's Education, and/or Career Preparedness for initial credit and will register using the Summer Credit Enhancement Sign-Up Form

  • Credit Enhancement Courses are for rising 9th, 10th, 11th, and 12th grade students.

  • Enrollment in Driver's Ed courses will be limited to a first-come first-serve basis

  • Students in Driver's Ed must have a driver's permit.

  • The sign-up form will open Monday, April 07, 2025, between 8AM-9AM

  • Late Registration: June 2-5, 2025, from 8:00am - 2:30pm in the Huntsville High School Media Center

• Credit Recovery registration will be done onsite only at the Huntsville High School Media Center.

• May 27, 2025, from 1:00pm - 4:00pm: Rising HCS 9th & 10th graders

  • Note: students must be present at registration to receive a loaner laptop

• May 28, 2025, from 8:00am - 4:00pm: Rising HCS 11th graders & 12th graders

  • Note: students must be present at registration to receive a loaner laptop

• May 29, 2024, from 8:00am - 4:00pm: Middle School & Non-HCS students/anyone else that still needs to register

  • Note: HCS students must be present at registration to receive a loaner laptop. HCS is unable to provide a loaner laptop for non-HCS students.

• Late Registration: June 2-5, 2025, from 8:00am - 2:30pm in the Huntsville High School Media Center.

• Tuition and registration fee for both credit enhancement and credit recovery course(s) must be paid in full no later than Friday, May 30, 2025

• All Summer School courses will have a tuition fee of $300 for all HCS and Non-HCS students

• A second course will be an additional $150

  
  

• HCS students can pay the bookkeeper at their High School or use the My School Fees link on the left side of their high school website

• Non-HCS students can pay online as a guest through Huntsville High School My School Fees (Non-HCS students will sign in as a guess on the site)

• Priority will be given to current HCS students

• No refunds will be issued once classes have begun

From May 27 to July 25, 2025, all HCS campuses, offices, and schools will be closed on Fridays.

Huntsville City Schools, in conjunction with the Alabama State Department of Education (ALSDE), will begin its annual Summer Food Service Program (SFSP) on Monday June 2, 2025. The Program will operate Monday through Thursday from June 2, 2025, to June 26, 2025, during summer learning activities.

Included Sites:

• James Dawson Elementary

• Farley Elementary

• Montview Elementary

• Morris Elementary/MIddle

• Rolling HIlls Elementary

• Sonnie Hereford Elementary

• Martin Luther King Jr. Elem

• Whitesburg Elem./Middle

For the external community sites, the program will operate from June 2, 2025, to June 26, 2025. The Program will be closed for the upcoming holiday on Wednesday, June 19, 2025. The community sites will be the Richard Showers Recreation Center serving lunch from 11:30 am to 12:30pm and Brahan Springs Splash Pad serving Lunch from 1:00pm to 1:45 pm.

At all summer learning school sites breakfast will be served from 7:30am – 8:30am and lunch will be served from 10:30am – 11:30am. All SFSP meals must be consumed on site. Serving times may vary at external community sites.

The car riders will enter through the south entrance off of Pulaski Pike Road.

All car riders must be dropped off/picked up in the rear of the building (front of the competition gym). Bus Riders will enter/exited through the bus entrance.

Students may be dropped off as early as 7:30 a.m. and we ask that they are picked up each day by 4:00 p.m. School starts at 8:30 a.m. and ends at 3:40 p.m.

Upon entering the building, students will report to their designated areas each morning.

All students will be released from their designated area by 8:20 am and report to their 1st block class each day.

• Students who choose to bring cell phones to school do so at their own risk. Mae C. Jemison High School will not be responsible if cell phones are lost or stolen.​

• Cell phones must be turned off and kept in backpacks during class.​

• Students who break the rule will have their phones taken by administrators, and parents will have to come pick up the phone between 3:40 and 4:00. No exceptions!​

• If you choose not to cooperate, you will be sent to ISS.

Huntsville City Schools is committed to preparing our students for college and careers beyond high school. In order to be successful in either arena, students must dress in a neat, clean, and appropriate manner and in clothing that encourages an atmosphere conducive to learning, work, and discipline. Students will not wear any article of clothing or display any insignia or sign that shows disrespect for any person, creed, race, color, sex, or nationality, or that may lead to a disruption of the learning environment. Our goal to prepare students for the future aligns with state educational authorities and court decisions which have determined that style of dress and hair should not disrupt classes, interfere with learning, prevent instruction, and should comply with state health and safety standards. Parents/guardians are expected to be our partners by monitoring students’ dress, and the District will annually re-evaluate the dress code and survey parents and students about the dress code.

HAT/HEAD COVERINGS

• Hats, visors, and other head coverings (including sunglasses) may not be worn in school buildings. Exceptions:
• Head coverings that have religious significance (approved by an administrator)
• Head coverings worn for medical reasons (approved by an administrator)
• Special events and/or circumstances that receive administrative approval
• Non-gang related head scarves may be worn as an accessory.
• Bandanas are not permitted.

SHIRTS, TOPS,BLOUSES, T-SHIRTS,& HOODIES

• Shirts, tops, blouses, T-shirts, and hoodies that are too tight or revealing are not permitted.
• Oversized shirts must be tucked in (an oversized shirt/hoodie/sweatshirt/top is defined as excessively large and long).
• Hoodies and sweatshirts must fit appropriately. Hoods may not be worn in school buildings.
• Shirts may not bare midriffs, including when arms are raised.

• Halter and spaghetti strap tops and dresses are not permitted, unless covered.
• Undergarments must be completely covered.
• Sleeveless shirts with revealing armholes are not permitted.

PANTS, SHORTS, SKORTS, SKIRTS, & DRESSES

• Hemlines of all shorts, skorts, skirts, and dresses (including slits) must not be higher than the middle of the thigh.
• Pants or jeans that have holes above the middle of the thigh may only be worn if opaque tights, leggings, or shorts are worn beneath. Holes in pants may not reveal the student’s hips, bottom, or undergarments.
• Yoga pants, leggings, or jeggings are permitted. However, the top must cover the student’s bottom.
• Students may not wear pajamas (except for special events and/or circumstances that receive administrative approval).
• Pantlegs may not drag on the floor.
• Pants must be secured at the waist.

Clothing that displays illegal behavior is not permitted. Any article of clothing, jewelry, or haircut depicting gangs, violence, sex, drugs, alcohol, mutilation, or language that could be considered obscene or vulgar will not be permitted.

• All clothing should be worn as designed. Examples: belts buckled, no underwear as outerwear, no underwear exposed, suspenders over the shoulders.
• “Slides” or flip flops may not be worn during P.E.
• House slippers are not permitted.
• Jewelry that could be used as a weapon is not permitted.

We encourage you to think about what you are wearing and how it reflects on you. You will be seen by other students, teachers, staff, and the community. Put your best foot forward and show the world you respect yourself and your school. We encourage your individuality, but we also encourage you to dress for success. Should you wear items that violate the dress code, you may be asked to change into clothing available at the school or wait in ILC while a parent/guardian brings a change of clothes. Disregard for the dress code will lead to disciplinary action, in accordance with the Behavioral Learning Matrices.

As we understand the importance of having a nutritious meal, Huntsville City Schools Child Nutrition Program will be providing breakfast, lunch and supper each day to our students.

Please encourage your child to eat healthy meals and participate in the JHS CNP program daily.

Students are prohibited from bringing or having outside food delivered (fast food/UberEats/DoorDash) to the school. Parents will not be allowed to drop off outside food (restaurant prepared food).

· 3 tardies equal 1/2 day ISS (in-school suspension)

· 6 tardies equal full day ISS

· 12 tardies equal full day ISS

· after 12 tardies, the student will receive 1 day of ISS for each tardy

Students will be required to report to the school each day by 8:30am. Attendance will be taken each block. Parents will receive a automatic call notification if you child is absent or fails to report to his/her classes.

Good student attendance enhances learning. When a student is not in school, he/she misses valuable instructional time. HCS views attendance and academic achievement as equally important and has policies, procedures, and supports designed to encourage students to attend school.

A student may have a total of 7 excused absences for illness without a doctor’s statement. After an accumulation of 7 excused absences for illness without a doctor’s statement, the student will receive unexcused absences for illness unless absences are documented with a doctor’s statement. Any exception to this policy will require a doctor’s documentation of a chronic illness that causes absences which may not comply with the

attendance policy.

Students and parents are required to attend Early Warning sessions when students have been referred for one of the following reasons or combination of reasons:

• Five or more unexcused absences

• Seven or more questionable excused absences which were not satisfactorily explained

• Ten or more unexcused tardies

* All students/parents (K-12) are subject to the regulations of the Early Warning Program.

The administration at Mae C Jemison School understands that students may have to attend doctor, dentist, or other appointments during the school day. We would ask that you minimize these absences as much as possible. Daily INSTRUCTION is IMPORTANT !

The Attendance Office is located in the rear of the building (inside the competition gym lobby).

Any time your child is absent from school, a doctor excuse or parent note must be submitted to the Attendance Office.

o Please submit a copy of the doctors excuse or parent note to the Attendance Office or email copies to deidre.walton@hsv-k12.org or terrance.young@hsv-k12.org.

o Please notify Nurse Savage, crystal.carter2@hsv-k12.org if you have any issues relative to sickness/illness/medication.

Check-outs:

A student can only be checked out by an adult that is listed in PowerSchool. The adult must have a valid ID in order to check out a JHS student.

There will be no check-outs over the phone. This is prohibited.

We have partnered with Alabama A&M University Upward Bound Program to offer FREE tutoring to any of our students during JAG Time/Z-Block and after school

(Tuesday and Thursday’s):

The North Alabama Center for Educational Excellence (NACEE) has once again been awarded a Talent Search grant. We are excited to continue offering free support services to the students of Jemison High School.

NACEE Representative will be on campus during Z Period each day and and after school in the College Academy (downstairs) lounge area to assist students. Please see your Grade Level Counselor for assistance.

The Talent Search Program identifies and assists individuals from underrepresented populations who have the potential to succeed in higher education.

I would like to meet with you to discuss the free services (virtual and in-person) we will be able to give to your students, including:

• Tutorial services
• Academic, financial, career counseling
• Post-secondary school information
• Exposure to college campuses
• Career exploration
• Mentoring/job shadowing
