Discovery Education Is Now In Canvas
The Discovery Education – Canvas integration provides an embedded search widget, enabling users to work seamlessly across systems to add Discovery Education content to Canvas. You can access it in many different ways: Navigation Bar, Module External Tool, Plugin from the Rich Content Editor, and as an external tool in an assignment submission. We are working on a single sign-on solution to gather assignments, but this is a good first step to have access to more videos that support instruction. You do need to have a Sanger ISD Discovery Ed account to use it; the codes to set that up are on the help sheet attached. To access the help/click sheet and videos, click on this link. Remember that you need to be a member of the Sanger ISD Staff Course to see it; you can join it by going to https://sangerisd.instructure.com/enroll/D7B4KC and registering for the course. We will also be featuring Discovery Education at the November #WeLearnWednesday!
Dyslexia Support from Brooke Garnett
Despite remediation for dyslexia, or having a normal amount of classroom instruction in spelling and writing, spelling and writing difficulties persist throughout life and require understanding from those who teach or work with the individual. Struggling spellers can be helped with good instruction and accommodations:
Important supports for dyslexic students in regards to writing include the following:
· grading written work primarily on content.
- writing correct spellings over incorrect ones and limiting rewrites to a reasonable amount.
- providing proofreading assistance.
- encouraging students to dictate their thoughts before writing and giving them the spellings of key content words to use in writing.
- allowing students in intermediate grades and higher to type exams and papers or to use a voice-translation device on a computer.
- encouraging students to hand in early drafts of research papers and essays to allow for revision before grading.
Dr. Louisa Moats reminds educators that after 1st grade, spelling instruction should follow and complement decoding/phonics instruction for reading. Understanding corresponding sounds and letters comes first. Aligning phonics instruction with spelling instruction is a powerful reinforcement. The International Dyslexia Association (IDA) thanks Louisa Cook Moats, Ed.D., for her assistance in the preparation of this fact sheet.
