Parent/Teacher Conference Updates
Parent-teacher conferences are a great opportunity to discuss your student’s progress and development with our teachers and staff. This year, conferences will take place in person and will be 15 - 20 minutes with each teacher.
2nd - 5th grade students should plan to attend conferences with their parents as this year we will have student INVOLVED conferences.
Conference Dates/Times
When: Monday, November 20 1:00 – 5:00 p.m. and 6:00 – 8:30 p.m.
Tuesday, November 21 8:15 a.m. – 1:30 p.m.
Where: All SD 161 school buildings
Virtual conferences can be scheduled if you cannot attend in person.
Please see the additional letter included with this email regarding how to sign up for conferences via Skyward. If your child sees an interventionist, they will join the general classroom teacher’s conference time if the schedule allows, or you MAY schedule separately.
Specials teachers (art, music, PE, and STEAM) will host a drop-in open house format if you wish to meet with them.
During the conference, teachers will share information with parents, including:
Grades, progress, and assessment information
Work samples, which may include writing samples, projects, and other artifacts
What is working well, and what support may be needed?
Attendance issues or concerns
Class participation feedback
Fall Bookfair
Get ready! The Scholastic Book Fair is coming our way (YAY!). Choosing their own books empowers kids and inspires them on their journey to becoming lifelong readers. AND—as always every purchase at the Fair benefits our school.
Here’s what you need to know about the big event, which will take place in the Western Avenue Gym on:
- November 16th & 17th from 3:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m
- November 20th from 1:30 p.m. - 8:30 p.m.
- November 21st from 8:15 a.m. - 1:30 p.m.
Say goodbye to cash and hello to eWallet—your child’s digital payment account. Before the
Fair, set up eWallet for worry-free, cash-free purchases. Anyone can contribute! Share each
child’s eWallet so friends and family can add funds and give your kids more books to enjoy.
If you can’t make it to the Fair, then shop at our school’s Book Fair online. All orders ship
directly to your home, and shipping is free for book orders over $25. Every online purchase will also benefit our school.
Visit our Book Fair homepage to learn more and get started with eWallet and online shopping: https://www.scholastic.com/bf/westernavenueelemschool1
Spirit Wear Clothing Drive
Our PTO is sponsoring a WA spirit wear clothing drive. If you have gently used WA spirit wear that is outgrown please consider donating it back to PTO as we will be distributing it to our current wolves who may be unable to purchase spirit wear. Our hope is to help all of our wolves feel connected and proud to come to school and show their wolf pack pride.
Cold Weather Wear
It's that time in Illinois when you never know what temperature it may be from the morning to dismissal. Please make sure that your student has outerwear to match the temperatures. We go outside if the temperature with the wind chill is 20 degrees or higher (see graphic in the school information section).
If you are in need of support for outerwear for your student please contact our school social workers - Ms. Zarlengo or Ms. Wisniewski.
Attendance is one of the Keys 🔑 to Success
Did you know:
● Starting in preschool and kindergarten, too many absences can cause students to fall behind.
● Missing 10%, or 2 school days each month over the course of the year will make it harder to learn how to read and do math.
● Absences and tardies can negatively affect the whole classroom community.
● By 6th grade, chronic absenteeism is a sign that students may drop out of high school.
● Please contact the main office if you need to discuss your child’s attendance.
November Gratitude Challenge
It's time for our annual WA Gratitude Challenge. Thourhgout the month of November we are cahllenging our students to complete as many acts of gratitude as possible. Students will be bringing home a hard copy of the challenge on Monday. This year you can also upload photos to share with our WA school community on our padlet. Spread the joy of giving thanks each and every day. Gratitude Padlet
Den Depot Volunteers
We need volunteer shopkeepers for our upcoming Den Depot dates! The Den Depot is a mobile store where students are able to shop with wolfpack tickets. Shopkeepers will work 1-2 volunteers per shift where each shift will be 1-3 hours. Please arrive a few minutes early to check into the office with ID and get the Den Depot cart.
Room Party Clarification
Hello Western Avenue Families,
The PTO would like to express our heartfelt gratitude for your continued support and unwavering dedication. We truly appreciate everything that you do for our school community.
We received numerous questions from families regarding yesterday's Fall classroom party. We understand that there may be new families in the building who are not yet familiar with how the parties are organized.
During Curriculum Night/Open House, the PTO provided a classroom party sign-up sheet for each class. The room parent(s) introduced themselves to the classroom and requested your assistance in signing up to help with a game, craft, or donate snacks. If you have a kindergartner, your sign-up sheet was emailed to all parents using Sign-Up Genius.
While in the past all parents were invited to attend classroom parties, due to space and security concerns, administration is limiting the number of parents to 2 room parents and 3 additional volunteers. The parents who have already signed up to bring the mentioned items will have the first opportunity to participate in the party. If they choose only to donate and are unable to attend, the room parent will reach out to the classroom to request additional volunteers. Room parties aren't the only volunteer opportunities for families. We also have opportunities like the Book Fair, Den Depot, Library helpers, and various other activities that take place throughout the year.
Wondering how the room parent will inform you of volunteer opportunities? During schedule pick-up, the PTO distributed a QR code flyer for parents/guardians to scan in order to be added to our PTO/class contact list. Please note that Western Avenue cannot provide us with your contact information; it is up to you, the parent/guardian, to share that information with us. If you choose not to do so, you will not receive information from your classroom room parent or the PTO. We will not accept any contact information submissions after Friday, November 11, 2023.
We put a great deal of effort into offering a diverse range of activities, committees, and ways for parents to become involved throughout the year. However, we often find that the same parents sign up to volunteer. Our goal is for every family to volunteer at least once this year. Being present in the building is truly magical, and seeing the smiles on the children's faces will warm your hearts. Family involvement is at the heart of Western Avenue, so please take a moment to scan and complete the QR code so our school community can continue to thrive.

Moving??? If you move during the school year please contact the office to update your information in Skyward. If you move outside of the Western Avenue boundaries please contact Mrs. Isabelli. Outside Safety Waiting Area
In debriefing with Flossmoor Police after Wednesday's Code Red lockdown we discussed what to do for people arriving at the school and not knowing we are in a lockdown. Below is the procedure that we have jointly developed.
- Upon approaching the building outsiders would hear the Code Red announcement being play in Mrs. Isabelli's voice.
- Anyone coming to the school during this time will be directed to the baseball field area on Brassie Avenue to await entrance into the school building once it has been all cleared for safety.

Capturing Kids' Hearts - November focus: Teamwork
What is Teamwork?
Teamwork is the ability to work in unity with others towards a common goal. For us to learn how to become team players, it is important that we learn to listen, encourage our peers, and allow and invite others to contribute their talents and skills.
Why focus on Teamwork?
- Teamwork improves communication: Teamwork helps us improves our verbal and non-verbal communication skills, conveying that we care and a relevant message.
- Teamwork builds interpersonal awareness: Growing a great team requires us to first build strong relationships through better understanding ourselves and others.
- Teamwork celebrates diversity. Teamwork thrives from diverse ideas that come from a mixture of different genders, cultures, expertise, experience, and problem-solving approaches.
Teamwork in Action:
- Call them a team, not a class or group. A group consists of many different people. A team, however, has a common purpose and a shared responsibility for success.
- Require teams to set expectations for and manage their own behavior. Do not tell teams what type of behavior is expected -- let them decide for themselves with a Social Contract.
- Teach and encourage affirmations. Giving affirmations helps connect the team and builds trust, promotes engagement, and boosts a positive culture.
Alpha Wolves Program
We are excited to continue our Western Avenues Alpha Wolves Program which has been successful with the help of our dads and grandparents. The Alpha Wolves program looks for males to come into the building and help with recess, lunch, hallway monitoring, and just being a presence in the building. Last year our program was recognize by the Illinois State Board of Education at the Those That Excel Banquet.
What do the Alpha Wolves do?
Help out in the lunch room.
Play games with students at recess.
Walk the halls to monitor safety and hand out wolf pak tickets for students following expectations.
Commit to as many or as few days/times as possible based on your schedule
All volunteers will need to present their ids to run through our security system to volunteer
If you would like to join the Alpha Wolves please sign up for your days on this Sign-up Genius link. Bring your driver's license in to be scanned through our security system.
