Pros, Cons of High School Jobs for College Applicants
Many students and their families wonder about the potential benefits of working a job while in high school, particularly its impact on college applications and whether it can make a difference in the competitive world of college admissions.
Some experts say the pros of high school jobs outweigh the cons. That's partly because connecting a college application to a specific passion or theme is critical — and a job is one of the many ways a student can do that.
If you’re a high school student contemplating a job alongside academics, here are some pros and cons to consider.
Top Schools for Internship, Co-Op Programs
Some colleges and certain academic programs require students to participate in internships or co-ops before graduation. Getting work experience in college can help students land a job after graduation. One option for students to gain that experience is cooperative education programs, which can include paid full-time jobs that typically last three to 12 months, internships or other service-based experiential learning programs.

Careers in Finance- Networking Event
Mark your calendars for November 7th- U of M-Flint is hosting a networking event for students interested in pursuing a career in finance. A panel of three financial planners from Rachor Financial and Stephens Wealth Management will be in attendance. The school will be offering a $250 scholarship per event towards tuition at UM-Flint to each of your students attending the event. CLICK HERE to RSVP for the event.
Top Colleges That Still Require Test Scores
Most colleges are test-optional or test-blind now, but not these top schools. Recently, more schools have adopted test-optional or test-blind admissions policies. In fact, more than 1,900 schools will not require applicants to submit scores for fall 2024 admission, according to the National Center for Fair and Open Testing, a nonprofit advocacy group commonly known as FairTest.
However, some top colleges and universities – as ranked by U.S. News – still require applicants to submit SAT or ACT scores. CLICK HERE to learn more.
