Principal's Message
Good afternoon Canby High School Students & Families,
Welcome Back and Happy 2024! Many of our amazing and talented CHS students remained busy over break. Our athletes have successful competitions, our dance team performed at a Blazer Game, and many students served the community.
It is nice to get back into the routine of school. Next week is our Winter Spirit Week, which begins Monday with an assembly and with our first Unified Basketball game of the season. Unified basketball, a collaboration between Special Olympics and the OSAA, gives our intellectually disabled students an opportunity to play high school sports, hand-in-hand with non-ID students. These games are fun community events. I encourage everyone to come support our students! The spirit week will continue next week with fun dress up days and more events.
As we are now three weeks into the second semester, it is time to really concentrate on coursework. Keeping up with assignments is key and attendance is a vital component of high school success. Research is clear that missing more than 10% of school negatively impacts on time graduation. Every day counts! We so appreciate the partnership with our families as we emphasize the importance of being “Ready to Learn:” on time, prepared, and cell phones away.
Have a Wonderful Week!
Best,
Cari Sloan

Important Assessment Information for Canby Families
Thank you for supporting your child’s participation in the upcoming Oregon Statewide Assessments. Assessment is an important part of each student’s academic experience. Beginning in kindergarten and through grade 12, learners in the Canby School District experience a variety of formative, interim, and summative assessments. Oregon Statewide Assessments are one example of a summative assessment administered in grades 3 through 8, and grade 11. Students in these grade levels are required to participate in English Language Arts and Math assessments annually. In grades 5 and 8, students also participate in Science.
Canby School District, like all districts in Oregon, is striving for 95% or greater student participation. This goal is essential for understanding the depth and breadth of learning for student groups across our schools, and for evaluating programs and resources. Oregon Summative Assessment data provides information to the Canby community and to district teams about our successes or strengths and areas for improvement.
We will be communicating additional information about Oregon Statewide Assessment dates for your students’ grade level and ways to support your student’s success. You can find more information on our district State Assessment webpage. Please reach out to your school principal or classroom teacher if you have further questions. Canby School District appreciates your partnership.

Boys Basketball
Last Saturday, the boys basketball team had a hard fought loss at home against Oregon City high school, dropping the game 60-70. They rebounded on Tuesday in the NWOC league opener to beat Hood River Valley 76-58 in Hood River. Next up for the boys is home against Hillsboro at 6:00 pm on Friday January 5th.
Girls Basketball
On December 28th the Girls Basketball team beat North Salem 70-17. On Tuesday they won their NWOC league opener against Hood River 54-45. The girls team is currently 6-4. Our next game is home against Hillsboro on Friday January 5th at 4:30 pm. This unusually early game is an accommodation for the needs of Hillsboro’s team.
Swimming
The swim team won their third meet in a row defeating Milwaukie at home on December 15th. The girls won 140-19 and the boys won 137 to 8. Canby won every event of the meet and also took second place in each event as well. A great meet to finish out December. Their next meet will be against Hood River Thursday, January 4th at the Canby Swim Center. This will probably be their biggest dual meet challenge in the league.
Boys Wrestling
Over the break the boys wrestling team hosted the Larry Owings tournament. The team dominated this 16-team tournament with 10 finalists and 5 individual champions scoring 395.5. Champions included Jacob Young, Nico Yazzolino, Matthew Young, James Keinonen, and Jackson Doman.
Girls Wrestling
Last Saturday, the girls wrestling team competed at the Tigard Girls Tournament. The girls entered 10 wrestlers in the tournament and finished with 5 champions, 3 second place, and 1 third place finisher. The champions included Kyra Blair, Sydney Matlock, Emilia Ensrud, Jocelyn Garcia, and Madison Kidwell. Seniors Sydney Matlock and Madison Kidwell as well as Freshman Emilia Ensrud all remain undefeated on the season.
High School Rec Basketball is Back!
Canby Junior Basketball’s co-ed high school rec program is back and will offer an opportunity for kids in 9th-12th grade to keep playing who aren't otherwise on a school program roster. The 9-week schedule will be every Saturday evening from 8pm-10pm, January 13th to March 9th. Format for rec league will be dependent on participation levels each session and could vary from open gym pickup games, to structured 3v3 or 4v4 competitions.
