Reopening Update
Superintendent Baier and Assistant Superintendent McGonagle provided an update regarding the start of the 2020-21 school year.
Recognizing the challenge that distance learning poses for many of our families and students, in addition to the final Reopening and Instructional Plans, the district has created "The Family Guide to Virtual Learning," a document designed to prepare families to support students in distance learning. Families will receive the final Guide later this week from their school principals.
In preparation to bring students back to our campuses once it is safe and allowable, the district has also created 10 Things to Do Before Returning to School and a teacher-focused Health and Safety Protocols document to help families and teachers prepare students for the health and safety procedures that will be in place at all of our schools.
Superintendent Baier provided an enrollment update at all of our schools, including in the district's new TK-6 Virtual School, which will serve more than 500 students. The Virtual School staff includes 21 experienced and talented LASD teachers, who are charged with creating a cohesive Virtual School community, while maintaining community ties and connections with each of our neighborhood schools. Junior High students enrolled in both the Virtual School or Blended Learning models will be learning online for the first quarter of the 2020-21 school year, which runs through October 23rd, given the complexity of curriculum and scheduling.
The state's waiver application to allow for some in-person learning on campuses was just recently released and is being reviewed by district staff. While it is our preference to bring some students back to campus for in-person learning as soon as safely possible, the waiver process will require a thorough review, careful planning and a concerted effort from all staff to ensure a safe, measured and phased return of students to our schools.
