The School Library Monthly Update
from SD State Library School Library Services
OCTOBER 2022
GET TO KNOW SDSL'S ELECTRONIC RESOURCES
Call them what you want - databases, digital resources, or electronic resources - they are free, invaluable resources provided by the South Dakota State Library for all SD citizens. While there are electronic resources for all age levels listed on the "Complete List of Databases" page of the SDSL website, there are also many resources that are specific to K-12 students and educators.
In fact, also available on the SDSL website are curated lists of electronic resources for elementary school, middle school, high school, and academic students; as well as curated lists by school subject. Additionally, you have access to helpful handouts, downloads, and a K-12 database guide.
As the back-to-school bustle of September starts to fade, October is the ideal time to start introducing (or re-introducing) these resources to your teachers and students. But how do you share this information and who do you share it with? Check out some of these ideas to get you started:
- Invite classes to your library to teach about SDSL's electronic resources and/or to collaborate with teachers on projects implementing those resources.
- Host a morning, after school, or lunch event for your teachers in which you share information about SDSL's electronic resources.
- Send out a library newsletter that includes information on how your students and teachers can access SDSL's electronic resources and which resources might be best for their upcoming projects.
- Create an elevator speech (see below) about SDSL's electronic resources that you can use when you have a 1-1 conversation with a teacher.
- Create a video tutorial (see below) that your teachers can use in their classrooms.
- Mention SDSL's electronic resources to your students whenever you get the chance!
- Get on your school's October in-service schedule to lead a session about SDSL's electronic resources.

Elevator Speeches
An elevator speech is a clear, brief message about a topic. It communicates what the topic is, why it is valuable, and how it can benefit your students and teachers...all in 30 seconds to 1 minute, which is about the time it takes people to ride from the bottom to the top of a building in an elevator. It is beneficial to have an elevator speech rehearsed for those unexpected moments when you get to advocate for your library services.
Elevator speeches are handy to have rehearsed to advocate for school library programs in all kinds of situations: those planned and those unexpected. They are helpful when chatting with your teachers in the hallway, meeting a new administrator, having a discussion with a student at your desk, speaking at a school board or parent meeting, and even just bumping into patrons and stakeholders outside of the school.
When putting together your elevator speech about SDSL's electronic resources, keep in mind these three key characteristics. Elevator speeches are:
- Short
- Specific
- Memorable
Video Tutorials
Video tutorials can be an effective delivery method for sharing information about a variety of topics, including the SDSL electronic resources. To create a video tutorial, use a screen recording platform and explain to your students and teachers how to access one or more of the databases and include basic directions for how to use the resource.
Possible recording platforms include:
- Screencastify: www.screencastify.com
- Loom: www.loom.com
- QuickTime: Comes pre-installed on MacBook
- Zoom: www.zoom.us
- FlashBack Express: https://www.flashbackrecorder.com/express/
- XBOX Game Bar: Comes pre-installed on Windows 10
- Apowersoft: https://www.apowersoft.com/free-online-screen-recorder
- OBS (Open Broadcaster Software): www.Obsproject.com
TIPS
- Check out this video about free screen recorders and how to use them: https://youtu.be/nCNri04lHaI. This is a great tutorial video if you don’t already have a favorite screen recording platform or if you’ve never used one.
- Choose a database that is relevant to the grade level you work with and the research projects they do throughout the school year.
- You don’t have to record yourself in your tutorial, but it is nice for your students and staff to be able to see you for at least part of it.
- Keep your tutorial BRIEF enough to hold interest but DETAILED enough to teach the database basics. It should be simple and clear.
- Introduce yourself and your content.
- Explain how to access the SDSL databases from the SDSL website and/or your library website.
- Show how to access curated lists for elementary, middle, and high school.
- Discuss how there is no login due to GeoIP if you are within the state borders.
- Show the main features of the databases and how those relate to the needs of your students and staff.
Below are two great examples from students of 2022's ExCITE! Library Methods Course.
