IKu, YouKo, RAKU
If you are like me, you probably have no idea what a Raku is. No Worries Mr. Welch, DCHS Art Teacher/ Art Club Sponsor/ Asst. Stage Director, is expertly trained in the art of RAKU.
RAKU is a Japanese style of firing pots. With a normal firing you put your pots in the kiln, fire it up to about 2100 degrees and let it cool over about 12 hours. In RAKU you fire up to 2100, open the kiln and remove your pots using large tongs while the glaze is in a molten glass state. Then you put them into a secondary container full of flammable stuff (newspaper, sawdust, etc) and it instantly ignites. Then you seal the container and let it sit about 30 minutes. Using this process you can produce metallica and iridescence otherwise impossible to get.
BTW, we are the only school in the area using this technique.
Baseball Babysitters
On Friday December 9th, the Decatur Central High School Baseball Team held its 4th Annual Kids Night Out! The evening was a huge success with over 50 kids participating this year. Baseball players, (current and former!) coaches, and parents all helped to provide a fun, safe environment where kids aged 5-12 played basketball, soccer, floor hockey, wiffleball, kickball, video games, crafts and painting, and more!!
This year the players and parents also sponsored 15 kids from the community and purchased Christmas gifts for needy families! This event has become a tremendous holiday tradition in which our players have the opportunity to give back to the community while building team chemistry and helping others! Thanks to everyone involved and we can’t wait to make it bigger next year!!
