OSEA Chapter 48 ~ Our Voices
February 2019
President's Message:
Happy February!
If you missed the news on the contract vote. The proposed changes to Article 2 and Article 8 in our contract were approved. Thanks to all who came out to vote. We enjoyed seeing you and having a minute or two to chat!
I'm excited for what is coming in our chapter-- we are continuing our focus on member organizing, but now with an emphasis on Work Site Organizers (WSO's.) The types of things a WSO does is to attend chapter meetings, post chapter information on the designated bulletin board space, and to welcome new employees. It's not a lot a work, but can have a big impact! Some of you already perform many of the functions of a WSO by being a resource for classified employees in your building, and sending questions and concerns on to the executive board. I know you can do it!

March for Our Students
Make your Presidents Day count and show up for students. Join educators in Salem to march for education funding on February 18th.
Huge class sizes and caseloads. Room clears. Missing support staff. Limited course offerings and programs. Our students deserve better.
We are fighting for significant investments in K-12 education during this legislative session. It's time to show our lawmakers that our schools need funding now. Let's march to tell them our students can't wait.
Join BEA on February 18th in Salem for a rally to show that our students can't wait any longer for fully funded public education.
Any questions email Sara Schmitt - BEA President

Beaverton School District Classified Contract Highlight
Article 22 Personnel File
This month I want to share important information with you about the contents of your personnel file. The majority of your personnel file contains your applications and its accompanying information, evaluations, any certificates/certifications that you hold. The other information in your personnel file could include any disciplinary or corrective action plans that you may have experienced during your career with the Beaverton School District.
I have bolded portions of the article that I want you to pay particular attention to, as our leaders and I get many questions regarding these topics.
As always, if you have any questions or concerns about your contract, please get in touch with me.
Article 22 Personnel File:
No information that relates to an employee’s performance shall be placed in an employee’s District personnel file unless the employee has had an opportunity to review the material. The employee shall acknowledge that he/she has had the opportunity to review such information by signing the document(s) in person or electronically, and may make a statement that such signature does not necessarily indicate agreement with the contents thereof. The employee will also have the right to submit a written or electronic response to the information placed in his/her file. This response will be reviewed by the Administrator of Classified Personnel and be attached to the information filed. Evaluations will remain in the physical personnel file or in an electronic employee management system.
Letters of consultation, warning and/or reprimand, and “corrective action” plans may be removed from an employee’s personnel file at the discretion of management. An employee may request that such information be removed from his/her personnel file after two years, providing that no subsequent adverse information has been placed in the file. The file will be reviewed by Human Resources in consultation with the supervisor. If they agree to remove the documents, the documents will be destroyed.
An employee’s personnel file shall be available for inspection upon his/her request, and reasonable notice, to the Administrator of Classified Personnel.
