Ms. Newton-Scott's Notes
Happy Monday!
This past weekend brought in Fall like weather. I enjoy the Fall so much, so I was very happy for the mild weather and enjoyed outside time with my family. If you haven't had a chance to view the plan for the return to in-person learning, here is the link to the outline of the plan.
If you have questions related to the plan, please submit via this form.
The school nutrition department is expanding their meal service program. Beginning this week meal service will be available to all CSD students free of charge. In addition, all children who are 18 and younger (or under the age of 21 for youth with special needs), may participate regardless of being a CSD student.
Families are still asked to complete the pre-order form to participate in the program.

Celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month
Hispanic Heritage Month recognizes and celebrates the contributions Americans tracing their roots to Spain, Mexico, Central America, South American and the Spanish-speaking nations of the Caribbean have made to American society and culture. The observance was born in 1968 when Congress authorized the president to issue an annual proclamation designating National Hispanic Heritage Week. Just two decades later, lawmakers expanded it to a month long celebration, stretching from September 15 to October 15.
This week we highlight Sonia Sotomayor!
Appointed by Barack Obama in 2009, Sonia Sotomayor became the first Hispanic (and third woman) to serve as Supreme Court Justice. She is known for her calls of reform to the criminal justice system and her dissents on issues regarding race, gender, and ethnic identity. She has also written a few children's books-Just Ask!: Be Different, Be Brave, Be You, Sonia Sotomayor: A Judge Grows in the Bronx / La juez que crecio en el Bronx, and Turning Pages. I would recommend reading any of these three books with your children.

The fee for the full year of orchestra classes is $200. Need-based scholarships for the class fee and/or instrument rentals are available.
For more information about classes, instrument rentals, or to register your child for orchestra, please visit www.DecaturStrings.com.

And… we need you quite frankly ☺ We are working hard to think outside of the box to create a fun and healthy school climate for our kids despite the challenges of 2020! There are many ways to get involved depending on your time and talents. Please check out our most immediate needs and contact Christie Bell at ptovolunteer@favepto.org if you are able to help!
Socials:
We are establishing a social committee to explore how we can create community despite restrictions with physical distancing. We are looking for a chair and a co-chair to lead this initiative. If you cannot commit to a leadership role, but would like to be involved in the committee, we are looking for members as well!
Diversity Equity and Inclusion:
The DEI committee is being led by Christy Norman and Angie Prophet. We are looking for parents who are interested in serving our DEI committee with a one hour monthly meeting commitment and participation on projects determined by the committee.
Fundraising:
This committee will plan and execute fundraising events for the year.
Virtual Field Trips:
We are putting together a committee to come up with ideas on how to create virtual field trip experiences.
Last but not least, our PTO President, Laura Spriggs has been working overtime to keep the PTO moving in the right direction during these uncertain times. We are looking for a Co-President to assist Laura with her duties. Candidates with previous PTO/PTA Board experience are preferred.
