Can you believe that this week will close out the 2nd nine weeks? This school year is flying by, and it is amazing to see the growth that our students are making every single day! Every minute of instruction is crucial to our students learning and growth. Lion Cub families, we challenge you to have your students at school on time every day and in class all day! EVERY MINUTE COUNTS!

Reminders:

• Families may come to eat lunch with your students. Please reach out to your child's teacher to let them know you are coming so they can plan for seating. Remember: NO OUTSIDE FOOD OR DRINK MAY BE BROUGHT IN. Upon arrival, please sign in at the front office and get a visitor's tag.

Last week, we started our mid-year AIMSWEB assessments for reading and math and K-2 math assessments. Next week, students in grades K-3 will begin their McLass reading assessments. As these assessments are completed, we will update our Super Bowl scores and issue cub currency for student growth, so stay tuned!

During the new year, are you looking for ways to give back to our community? Volunteering your time at our school would be a great way to be involved. We are currently looking for volunteers to help with our duty-free lunch. To volunteer, please complete the background check linked here and sign up by clicking the button below.

All volunteers must have a background check on file before they can volunteer.

Students in each House are collecting items for different Service Learning Projects. These projects will help our students grow their leadership capacity by being proactive, thinking win-win, and synergizing in different ways to give back to our community. We will begin collecting items next week until the end of the year. Below you will see a list of each House's project. Please help our students give back to our community.

Thinking Win-Win embraces an attitude that continually seeks mutual benefit in our interactions with others. It is choosing to believe that there is plenty for everybody and that other people’s success doesn’t come at a cost to us. Habit 4 aligns with the principles of mutual benefit, fairness, and abundance.

As we are closing out the 2nd Nine Weeks, we have many points to add for student growth, perfect attendance (no tardies or early sign-outs), and exhibiting leadership skills. Our point leaders will be updated in next week's newsletter.

Join us for the ABSS Family University. January 30th, 5:30pm to 7:30pm at Cummings High School, 2200 N Mebane St, Burlington, NC 27217. What to Expect: Meet the Superintendent; Light Dinner Provided; Child Care (Pre-K through 5th grade); Many Session Topics to choose from!

Take a selfie with an ABSS employee while you are there and post it to Facebook. Tag Haw River Elementary to earn $5 in cub currency AND 5 house points for your student(s).

For January our Lion Cub Leaders are being challenged to show initiative in practicing their math skills at home. Students will receive a January Money Maker Menu, and their goal is to complete 4 tasks a week. When students complete a task, a parent or guardian will need to check and sign off in that box.

For every four tasks that were completed and have a parent's signature or initials, students can receive $1 in cub currency. At the end of the month, students will need to return their completed Money Maker to school! If your child needs an extra copy, they are linked in the buttons below.
