The parking lot is ALWAYS closed to parent vehicles. Only staff are permitted to enter the parking lots. Please park on the street and walk into the lot for morning arrival and for afternoon dismissal. Thank you!
Kindly return the first-week transportation form on the first day of school so that we know how your child will be going home for the first few days of school. This is especially important for bus students! If you qualify for bus service but wish to decline it for the year, please email Ms. Gina Gandolfo ggandolfo@whufsd.com

We will celebrate International Dot Day on Thursday, September 15th! Your child is invited to wear something with dots on it that day.

Chestnut Street Back to School Night
This is an opportunity for parents/guardians to meet the teacher and learn about the Kindergarten experience at the Chestnut Street School. Please be advised that this evening event is for adults only. Thank you for your understanding.
The teachers' presentations begin promptly at 6:30.
The English as a New Language (ENL) Workshop will be held at 6:00 pm with Ms. Schiavo. If your child will receive ENL services this year, Ms. Schiavo will reach out to you in writing by Wednesday, September 7, 2022.
Please join us at 2:00 pm in the Chestnut Street cafeteria for our annual PTA Welcome Tea! Learn about ways to get involved with your child's education through the PTA and the Parent and Family Engament opportunities throughout the year. You can also offer suggestions for additional ways to involve families in our school community.
As you talk to your child about their day, consider asking him or her to explain more about what they learned, why it is important for them to know, and how they know they have mastered it. These questions are part of our Visible Learning work.
Sight Words
We will begin our sight word study in October. The link below will take you to a slideshow with all our words for the year so that you can practice at home.
Please be sure to read at home with your child every night in whatever language you are comfortable with.
We will launch with the We Are Readers Unit! Students will explore concepts of print and storytelling through a variety of texts both with print and wordless. Interactive Read Alouds will set the foundation for good reading habits and reinforce concepts of print.
Teachers will explain RazKids during Back-to-School-Night. The sites will be ready for you to use later this month.
Use RazKids to find a digital library of age-appropriate books for your child to read at home!
Writer's Workshop will launch with our Oral Storytelling Unit. Students will learn how to tell a story with a beginning, middle, and end! It's not time to put pen to paper yet, but the art of story telling will be developed through this unit as the foundation for writing.
Some of the 'Non-Negotiables' that you can expect from your child's writing in Quarter 1 include:
Use more than one color when drawing
Use real-life, appropriate colors
Figures have shapes for body
Sketch matches the “label” (word, letter, etc.)
In Math Workshop...
We are exploring Counting and Sorting along with establishing the classroom routines for Math Workshop!
Students will answer the essential questions below. Be sure to ask your child these questions!
What are numbers?
What is counting and how can it be used?
Students will work on the following skills:
Counting and representing quantities
Sorting and classifying
Collecting, representing, describing, and interpreting data
We are also launching ST Math to support deep conceptual understanding via personalized learning. You must use ClassLink to access ST Math. ST Math will be ready to use later this month. The link is below.
