Creative and Performing Arts Magnet at Lee High School
FamiLEE Update
Greetings!
We hope everyone has had a great Fall Break and that you and your students are looking forward to starting the second 9 weeks strong. This is our first Magnet Newsletter and we hope that it will help all of our Magnet families stay connected with what is going on in the magnet as a whole and specifically their child's magnet. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to reach out!
Our Fall Arts Festival is coming up on October 14, 11-2pm at Lee High School. Last year was our inaugural year for our Fall Arts Festival and it was a great opportunity for our students who collaborate with Academy for Academics and Arts to get to share their passions with the community. We would love to see all our families at school next Saturday participating in the family friendly hands on activities and seeing some student performances.
The school FamiLEE Focus is still your go to for all whole school news. Homecoming is quickly approaching along with our One Act "Murphy's Circus Presents: The Show Must Go On." We would love for all of our students to participate in the homecoming activities and come out to support our students who will be competing in Trumbauer by watching their performances on October 25 or 26.

This past week, Instrumental Magnet focused on All-State requirements. We currently have 6 scales learned with percussion and woodwinds playing 2 octaves. Students also received their All-State audition solos as well as their individual performance solos. The individual performance solos will be used to build their repertoire and perform at a possible fall and spring recital. We are also excited to announce that we will begin our string program on Monday, October 9, 2023.

Dance Magnet Director- Mrs. Hunkapillar
Parents-please remind your students to keep up with their notebooks. Each turn in counts as a test grade. Upcoming events in DME- The Major company will be performing in the Magnet Fall Festival on Saturday, October 14. All DME students will be teaching hands-on activities at the festival. We will begin working on the activities after fall break. The festival is a grade and it will also count toward the extracurricular requirements for each magnet student. These logs were given to the dancers as a hard copy to keep in their dance notebooks. The notebooks and the logs are part of the first semester’s final exam. I posted the logs on their Schoology Group in case they need to make another copy.
In class this week, the dancers have started their group choreography projects. All students are required to work in collaboration with their groups to create a student piece for the fall concert performance. This includes choosing and cutting their music, deciding on their costumes, and designing their lighting ideas. The fall concert is; “Ignite the Fire” November 16 and 17 at 7:00 pm. I will send very detailed information at a later date. All dancers are performing in our finale and will need to purchase something pink to wear for their costume. As always, if you have any questions, please email, call, or text me. ~Hunk
Creative Writing Magnet Director- Ms. Sisson
Students are diligently working on multiple contests each week:
PTSA Reflections - school competition in October
Trumbauer - playwriting - district in November
Poetry Out Loud - original, social issues, and anthology - school competition in December
All classes have decided our theme for Harmoniouslee vol. X will be "Lost in Translation." Art and literary pieces can be emailed to lhsharmoniouslee@gmail.com. All students have access to InDesign/ Photoshop and are learning design while choosing their best pieces for their personal and school literary magazines.
Our literary analysis focus this month will be the authors/professors: Kris Whorton of UTC and Sam Moe of UAH. We were gifted class sets of their books by the UAH English department. Dr. Whorton will run the authors' masterclass and critique session at UAH on October 24th.
Visual Arts Magnet Directors- Mrs. Johnson and Ms. Radowski
VA I Magnet is finishing their Dia De Los Muertos Infographic and glazing their pinch pots.
VA II is glazing their pottery pieces and will start looking at the pottery skulls they will do when we come back from Fall Break.
Visual Art Magnet III are developing research posters in groups to help educate the community about Dia de los Muertos. They are also creating a ceramic skull to honor someone who has passed. They will use traditional day of the dead symbols and personal symbols to help communicate.
Students needed to submit their Self-portrait still life this week. This is a major project grade for their first quarter report card.
Photography Magnet Director- Mr. Willmarth
Students are building the skills in order to be creative using Photography as their medium of expression. As we have laid the groundwork for technique, students will begin to create content. Beginning and proficient students have learned how traditional photographic mediums work and are now working on darkroom printing. Many students have a film camera to shoot with over Fall break. Advanced students have transitioned to using digital tools (Photoshop and Lightroom) to create unique compositions and will be using studio lights to create portraits this fall.
Film and Video Director- Mr. Lee
Students have completed production on Welcome to the Leegion Podcast, Season 2, Episode 1 which releases on October 1st. You can find the podcast on Spotify and Apple Podcasts.
