NHEF 32nd Annual Golf Classic
The New Horizons Educational Foundation (NHEF) held its 32nd Annual Golf Classic at Kiln Creek Golf Club this year. The Golf Classic raised over $52,500 for scholarships and honorariums and hosted nineteen local business sponsors. Congratulations to Sentara Health Plans for taking home the win this year! PNC Bank and Clancy and Theys, came in 2nd and 3rd, respectively. A special thank you goes out to all the sponsors, volunteers, and staff that made this year's event a success. Save the date for next year's Golf Classic at Kiln Creek Golf Club. The event is planned for October 17, 2024, more details will follow in the coming months leading up to the tournament.

Veterinary Sciences' Excursion to Isle of Wight County Schools' Agriculture Land Lab
The Veterinary Science students traveled to Smithfield, VA to visit the Big Red Barn at the Agriculture Land Lab. A hands-on, educational site for students to study agriculture, from growing crops to raising and nurturing farm life. The students got to hear directly from those participants working the farm on why they chose to take classes on-site and where they plan the experience to lead them in the future. The students enjoyed the visit and interacting with the animals outside the classroom.

High-flying physics experiment! Computational physics students investigate uniform circular motion using toy cows as their 'moo-tion' models.
Projectile Motion
From playing ball to launching rockets, projectile motion has many practical applications. Students enjoy studying the projectile motion as they shoot the projectile from the launcher set to a different angle.
Equilibrium in the Lab
Engineering Physics students are checking the meaning of equilibrium in the lab. They are trying to find experimentally the missing force and then practice vector addition to support their experimental findings.

The Center for Apprenticeship & Adult Training (CFAAT) is on a mission to visit all 23 high schools in the region. On October 5th, 2023 staff visited Woodside High School to showcase the opportunities available at CFAAT.

Hello Fall!
Mason Carter's third-year state apprenticeship electricians were grinding away on load calculation problems! Carter created class "Exit Tickets" for his class so when his students had completed their load equation calculations, they were free to exit class for the evening.
Youth Workforce Center Updates
Collaboration in Gloucester
Smart Transitions
In-School and Out-of-School Youth youth participated in weekly Smart Transitions Life-Work Portfolio Sessions in October. The sessions were designed to specifically address six of the critical success skills that employers are looking for: Speaking, Problem-Solving Skills, Self-Presentation Skills, Independence and Initiative, Work Ethic, and Attitude. The students were excited to receive the professional portfolios they had worked on during the class.
Beyond Ability
At the Youth Workforce Center (YWC), we see beyond ability! We would like to extend a special thank you to Sydney Smith of Versability Resources. The YWC is delighted to partner with Versability to enroll several participants in our Out-of-School Program. These young adults are on their way to successfully completing their welding training, provided by the Center for Apprenticeship and Adult Training. The YWC provides young people with the opportunity to obtain the technical training and work experience they need to secure full-time employment and build a sustainable career. All of the YWC services are provided at no cost to the participants.
Family Counseling Center Updates
The fall semester is underway at the Flanagan Counselor Education Clinic! We are so excited to serve our community through the New Horizons Family Counseling Center. We have several exciting updates to share with you as we step into the 2023/2024 school year.
The Clinic has a new group of students who are already hard at work in the New Horizons
Family Counseling Center! They bring with them a wide array of interests and many fresh ideas.
All the students are working closely with our new Clinic Director, Dr. Erin Woods. Dr. Woods is
a Licensed Professional Counselor, who joined the clinic in March of 2023. She is passionate
about providing high quality services to the families in our communities.
We are thrilled to continue offering couples, family, and individual counseling services. We hope
to implement some new service options this year, including new group options. If you have any
questions about our services or the referral process, please don’t hesitate to reach out to us by
phone or email. We look forward to our continued work together!
