Senior Seminar Speaker
Dryden High School Alumni
by Evan Shirling
The Friday before winter break, we had the opportunity to hear from some Dryden alumni. Kylie DeVlaminck, Jack Kaplan, and Reed Hall all came together to talk to us about what we should expect after high school and during college. They started off by talking about what they go to college for which turned into them reassuring us that we don’t need to know what we want to do as soon as we get there. They have switched majors multiple times and they are still figuring it out. Jack said that college is a time to figure out what you don’t want to do. Taking general education courses will help you explore all the different areas of study. You can eliminate the ones that you don’t like, and keep track of the ones you do.
They then started to give us advice on how to study. They said that they have spent a
good 30-40 hours a week working on their classes. Having a planner of some sort to keep track of your agenda is extremely important. Something that helped Jack a lot was buying a tablet. It made it very easy for him to scribble notes really fast and access any other resources that his professor had for them to use. Taking notes will take up most of your lectures, so there isn’t much time to get work done in class. It is important to have good time management skills. Finding what works for us is important too. The sooner we figure out how to handle our stress, schedule our working time, and get our work done right the better.
This discussion was turned into a round table discussion with the whole class. That helped a lot to make everyone more comfortable and get their questions out better. Overall, Kylie, Jack, and Reed did a great job speaking with us. Everyone should now have a much better understanding of what they should expect when they go to college.
