Shifting to Canvas: A Weekly Update
May 18, 2022
Itslearning Content Migration to Canvas
Migration of content out of active itslearning courses will begin on May 27, 2022. Content will be held in a secure location for teacher retrieval.
What will Migrate?
- All Pages, Notes, Files, Folders, Links, and Assignment Prompts will be migrated out of itslearning. (Note: Assignment attached files will NOT migrate.) The migration will include anything added to the active itslearning course through May 27, 2022.
- All Tests, Discussions, Tasks, and Assignment Attachments will need to be manually migrated. (See the Manual Migration Choice as one of the options in the Canvas PL Modules for more details).
What do teachers need to do?
- Organize and clean your resource folders in active itslearning courses.
- Remove anything that is not useful.
- Reminder: Curriculum offices will conduct a curriculum push in Canvas for the next school year. Teachers only need to keep content that is not part of the county curriculum.
- Empty the itslearning trash can.
- To access, click More – Trash Can.
- Select all deleted files and Delete Permanently.
- If the files are not permanently deleted, they will be included in the migration process.
Are You an Elementary Teacher?
On May 16, elementary teachers with a Canvas account will switch to Elementary View. One of the optional Canvas sessions is titled How is the Canvas Interface Simplified for Elementary? This session opens May 15 in the HCPS Canvas Professional Learning Course. Be sure to register in Hector.
What is Elementary View?
Elementary View provides a standard "Homeroom Page" template, so elementary students have a streamlined view to all subjects. Teachers can personalize this home page template.
The Global Navigation Menu Dashboard becomes "Home" and Courses becomes "Subjects."
If teachers need to switch back and forth from Classic View to Homeroom View, just click More options from the Dashboard or Home page.
Professional Development for Canvas Continues
All instructional staff must complete two additional required sessions (Digital Tools and Canvas Assignments), either during or after their duty day. Instructional staff may elect to complete additional choice modules outside of the duty day. Educational support professionals may also complete choice sessions outside of the duty day.
Register for required and choice sessions via the Hector links found in the HCPS Canvas Professional Learning course.
How Do I Access Canvas Professional Development?
Access Canvas via harford.instructure.com (consider bookmarking for off-network access). The Professional Development content is in the HCPS Canvas PL course in Canvas.
In the HCPS Canvas Professional Learning Course, How do I Check for Feedback on a Module's Signature Assessment?
Signature Assessments are being graded as they are submitted by a team of trackers. Trackers are working diligently to provide meaningful feedback on each Signature Assessment. Please be patient, as it may take a week or two to receive individual feedback. When your Signature Assessment is graded, you may receive an email depending on your notification settings. Check your Gradebook in the course to access Signature Assessment Feedback.
When a tracker marks your Signature Assessment as complete, they will also mark your status as complete in Hector, which will prompt sending of an email like the one below:
If a Signature Assessment is marked as incomplete, this will be visible in the gradebook with an X. The tracker will also leave feedback for you, and you can Re-submit Assignment.
Note: When feedback is provided, the participant must view the feedback before moving on in the Professional Learning Course.
